As with everyone else, I get a buttload of spam ads. Sometimes I go ahead and click the "unsubscribe" link and they say they take off the list. But, some ask you to enter your email address. I tend to be a little leary of this and won't enter the address. I assume they already have it as they already spammed me with it. I wonder if the links lead to something that is going to mess up my 'puter. Is their a need to be cautious of these links?

If the "spam" was sent by a commercial list management company, under misguided instructions from an otherwise legitimate advertiser, the unsubscribe link will usually work.

On the other hand, if the spam is typical unsolicited junk mail for pharmaceuticals, male enhancement, fake diplomas, Russian brides, Chinese watches, etc, clicking on an Unsubscribe link only confirms that your email address is valid. I never unsubscribe from a true spammer's list.

I rarely unsubscribe to newsletters or promotions that I didn't opt into. Before I decide, I look at the headers to determine if the email was sent from the same domain as the unsubscribe link and From field. If the domain matches in all important places, and the sender isn't a mail server in Asia, or Russia, or Brazil, or Nigeria, I may use their unsubscribe link. They already have my email address and it is well known among spammers.

If I don't feel warm and fuzzy about unsolicited commercial email (UCE/Spam), I report it to SpamCop and get their mail server blacklisted for 24 hours. I may try to unsubscribe first, then report them if the email continues. I had to do this with an online florist that didn't honor repeated attempts to unsubscribe from their mail list. The SpamCop report finally got their attention.
