Why not avail yourself of some key information, such as you ask in your post, by visiting the JerryByrd-FanClub.com/ site and turn to Jerry's Guitars page?
He discusses the string set-up that he used for years that gave him one of the sweetest steel guitar sounds EVER! Jerry was acknowledged as "The Master of Touch & TONE"........ There had to be a reason for this, eh? |

Ray:
I checked out that web page and although I think it is very interesting I think it would be helpful to know what brand and gauges of strings he used in more recent times. Can you share that information with us? Or is that one of those things that if you told me, you'd have to shoot me?

Not satisfied with store-bought packaged strings, Jerry experimented until he found the perfect combination of strings that was able to produce "his sound".
In the early days, Jerry used Spanish Guitar strings distributed by the Gibson Guitar Co. For strings #1, #2 and #3, he used plain, second guitar strings and used a plain 3rd string for his fourth string position. This enabled him to play seamless melody lines without the slightest hint of "string noise" during his many forward and reverse bar slant positions.
Jerry used flat wound strings for the remaining string requirements.
During recent years, Jerry suggested to Wayne Tanner of Belverde, Texas, that Wayne should give up that plain fourth string in lieu of an appropriate gage wound string. |
Thanks!
Steve
P.S. I was asking about flat wound strings recently and many people here recommend the S.I.T. semi-flat wound string sets made by Scotty's Music. I got some from JustStrings since I didn't see them on the strings page here. (They start off with round wound strings and then grind them down for a flatter surface.) _________________ www.blueguitar.org

STEVE: Only Scotty could tell us the real facts pertaining to your question but I seem to recall Jerry telling me that he simply used 'Sho-Bud' Strings from "SCOTTY's"..........
I could be wrong on this.....
Now having told you, the shooting thingie becomes and issue but.....I'd prefer we do this on the honor system. Perhaps you could take care of this matter yourself then we'd all be squared away. |
