Hello to all.
First, I am a father with a very talented son who is a guitarist. I myself am pretty much a gearhead with
a limited musical background. Over the years I introduced my boy to some noted guitarists so he would
know there was more to his instrument of choice than the pop stuff hears with his peers every day.
This includes the likes John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, etc.
A few years ago we went to see Roger Waters perform Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. As you may
have guessed that led to his appreciation for David Gilmour. Hearing Gilmour's use of a steel sparked his
curiousity in the instrument so now I'm here. I have ended my search for a steel for my son and scouring
this site gave me the priceless information I needed.
I researched the available options within my price range and I am awaiting this. $675 + shipping.
(I did just miss out on a beautiful Deluxe 8 sold by a forum member a couple of days ago). However,
to me it just kind of called out because it's a Deluxe 6 which Gilmour replaced his Jedson's with. Given
my son's appreciation of DG this find seemed appropriate. Also, I've seen a few Deluxe 8 but the 6 string
seems to be a little elusive. I'm all for getting something that will at least hold it's value for years to come.
I don't know if I did good or not but I was willing to take the risk because it was complete with legs
and case. Also, I'm pretty handy or have people I know that can help with a recondition.
Well there you have it. The question I really need to know is, does anyone have a source for the correct case lining fabric? I have found fabrics to line a couple of guitar cases at local fabric stores but this I want return to original if possible.
Thanks

Thanks Robert.
From my research this past couple of weeks someone got a great deal on yours. I definitely experienced some sticker shock. But I look at it like an investment.
As you can tell I passed on the D8 Pro I asked you about. Price was $800 from the big guitar store and they actually had it listed as a 60's Stringmaster. The condition of the chrome plus the lack of case held me back. I was looking forward to hearing those traps though. But I believe it all happens for a reason and the Deluxe is more appropriate at this time.
Out of curiousity was the price I paid reasonable?

DAVID, IT'S A FENDER, That should say it all. I had a D8 purchased it new in '53 for $250.00 to day it would cost $$$$ used. the D8 you saw on ebay was a steel [no pun intended] You can always have a case made. I just made one for my new Lap Steel. Back to the FENDER you got your son, It is a CLASIC. Were happy for you, oh yes WELCOME TO THE FORUM.

Hi David, nice Fender. I'm not sure I understand this:
"The question I really need to know is, does anyone have a source for the correct case lining fabric?"
That does look like the original Fender case lining for that year and case.
Do you mean you want to reline it? IMO that would not help the resale value. Best to leave it as is if possible.

Thanks all for the welcomes.
Scott, I was thinking of relining it. I do this kind
of stuff for a living and it would be fairly easy for
me. However, I was planning on removing the original
lining intact and keeping it if possible. I will make
that final decision when it arrives. Additionally, I
might consider having it refinished because I live
close to a Fender certified luthier and it's
something he could do. However, this is based on what
I can find out about the history of the D6. It
obviously has some stories to tell. The seller
didn't have any knowledge and purchased it as a
decorative piece.
Having abundant research I haven't yet determined if
Vintage Fender steels follow the same course as
Fender/Rhodes keyboards. For those, restoring doesn't
affect value. I've actually picked up a couple of
those also. I've seen some threads on this forum
where members have worked on their's but it seems the
consensus is to leave it alone.
Wayne, the D8 I referred to before was a GC listing. It was
a Dual 8 Pro w/traps and they had it listed as a
Stringmaster. I know now it was a good price but I'm
glad I found the Deluxe 6 instead.
When I get it I will take some good quality pics and
post them.
