I've seen this discussed a few times, people complaining strings 1 and 8 are not covered well by the short lipstick pickup on their 8-string Morrell lap steels. I've fixed a bunch. Replace the pickup with the 7-string ST7E1 from WD Music. A new mounting plate will be needed. I have the plates in stock most of the time. String spacing will still be narrow. For a more extensive fix, replace the pickup, mounting plate, nut and bridge to give you .375 spacing at the bridge. Jerry Wallace made a bunch of those pickups for me a while back, email me and I'll tell you what to order from him. It's also possible to install a Wallace True Tone pickup but it requires routing out a larger chuck of wood. some routing may be required for any of the above changes. I have two Wallace 8 pickups here with .361 spacing that may work on the narrow Morrell. If I can help a couple of people with a Morrell, free if you pay postage. Bob |

Hi Bob,
Do you know if the Morrell 8-string guitars use a standard length 6-string pick up? And then just try to cram all 8 strings over the pick up, resulting in super tight string spacing (and strings 1 & 8 sometimes not being covered)?
My reason for asking, I have a Morrell 6 string body that I would like to convert to a 7 string by making a new nut & bridge. Would a standard length 6 string lipstick pick up work for a 7 string configuration?
Thanks . . . Steve Green _________________ Some songs I've written |

The lipstick pickup used by Morrell on their 8-string is actually a 7-string guitar pickup. The specs are on the distributor's website, wdmusic.com It's a Kent Armstrong pickup. They also have a 6-string lipstick pickup available. The opening in the mounting plate is lager for Morrell's 8-string than the opening in their mounting plate for their 6-string models. |

Please note, I've given away the two Wallace pickups. Jerry Wallace Music can make just about any size and I'd recommend them for buying replacements for modifying Morrell or other lap steels. |
