If it is the red one you are asking about, it is in Missouri.

John...Are you referring to the guitar he was playing when he headlined the Norwalk Ct. steel show a few years back? I seem to remember that as being more of a dark purple color. |

John, I feel blessed and privileged to be the owner of that guitar. It is a work of art with wonderful tone.

Michael, you are one lucky guy to own such a rare instrument. Just knowing the fact that John Hughey played this guitar must make you feel privileged like you say.
I would just love to see some more detail pics of this guitar! _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Thanks for your kind response Michael, and congratulations on owning such a rare and beautiful instrument, with a great provenance.. The changer looks a little bit like a bolt on...is that the case? Also please, is it a hybrid changer? If you get a chance, perhaps sometime you might post some detail pictures, for those of us who are fans of two greats of the steel guitar world, John Hughey and Bruce Zumsteg.
Forumites: Any other wood neck Zum pics would be most welcome in this thread. Anybody ever see a wood neck mica body Zum?
Regards and best to all,

This has nothing to do specifically with Zum's, but Franklin built a D-10 with a Brazilian hardwood necks, that Paul has (or had) and he claimed it sounded no different than one with aluminum necks. |

once your ear decides what it likes, that's what comes out...pretty much. i go between a metal neck zum and wood neck emmons and in the studio the sounds come out quite similar to each other.
i love that wood neck zum and would be thrilled to own it, especially with the hughey connection. win-win! |

I can tell you a little more about this guitar. A few years back,in the tuning room at a particular steel show, Bruce Zumsteg was helping John try out a different pickup on this guitar. Johnny Cox was at this same show trying out a different guitar in the tuning room. John was using one of my pedals, it was the first one I had built where the power supply un-plugged. John owned and used 8 of my pedals, and bought every one of them. John told me, "I want to pay for the pedals I get from you, because if I decide not to use them you can't complain". This is why to this day I don't give pedals away to famous people. If John Hughey was willing to pay for his pedal, why should I give pedals away to some so called famous player? John talked Hall Rugg into buying one of my pedals, and Hall eventually bought 4 of my pedals before his death. Anyway--getting back to the tuning room at the steel show and the testing of this Zumsteel in the picture. The next day after Bruce Zumsted and John were doing the testing in the tuning room, signs went up on all the walls of the tuning room---"NO TESTING OF EQUIPMENT IN THE TUNING ROOM". These signs offened a lot of people and were the result of a jealous guitar builder who had cut some kind of special deal with the people running the show. I am not going to mention the Show,or the jealous guitar builder as he is dead now. I never attended this particular show again--for that reason! Mike McGee, in most people's opinion, is the best steel guitar player in this area, which includes all the Shows in Branson. Mike is one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and has ZERO ego problems. Mike is just a wonderful person and an outstanding steel guitar player. Mike has used a Hilton Pedal for many years and uses a Hilton Pedal with the guitar in this picture. |

I've always loved Mike's choice of notes. I don't have a way of posting pics, but I own the blue twin to this guitar, except mine has aluminum necks.

John, it is a bolt-on changer. I am not a builder, but I think I was told that all wood neck guitars will be a bolt-on changer of some type. Maybe the builders can speak to this. It is NOT a hybrid, and was built in 2001. I will try to post some pictures of the underside as soon as possible.
Tim, those are Emmons single coil pickups in both necks, which I'm told is what was in all of John's guitars. Bruce measured these 2 and they are identical and measured at exactly 20k. |

Mike not only looks great behind that Beautiful guitar, but Mike McGee is a Premeir player, and in my opinion does not get the recoginition that He deserves, not to mention a very personable Man. I'm glad to call him a friend. Larry _________________ Mullen G2 SD10 3 & 5 The Eagle

Hook, I was hoping I'd see you and Frank this last weekend. Take a break from making all those 10's of dollars next time! Missed you my friend. Tell Frank I said hello.
Bent, I'll try to get some closeup pictures of the guitar tonight.
I must also say heartfelt thanks for the very kind words from my good friends and steel guitar buddies in MO. I am humbled. |

Mike, thanks so much. Man that thing is just loaded! How does Bruce stuff all those knee levers in there and still make the thing work? Workmanship at its best. And to think John played that steel every day. What a feeling it must be... _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars
