Ive been working with Jeff Newman's Speed picking video and noticing that he moves his bar back and forth quite a bit, vertically following whatever string he is picking. I am learning this technique but I wonder what is the purpose of it as all of the blocking is done with the picking hand. Its giving my left forearm a bit of a workout and I'm sure its for good reason but it's not really explained.
I love the Jeff Newman courses. They are great. I'll be playin' hotlicks in no time ! Laughing

Karen,
That is part of the blocking technique if I read what you are saying correctly. If you look closely, you will see that his bar is tipped up to contact only the string he is picking at the time.

Karen, the purpose is to aid blocking the higher strings with the second finger on the bar hand. This helps a lot when doing a slide...it keeps the unwanted strings from making unnecessary noise.

Along the same line, the bar hand's thumb can effectively block the lower strings...for the same reason.

It can take some practice, but is a very valuable technique.
