a new economy model using bits and pieces of leftover parts is being offered for over $2100.
single neck.
looks kind of like a beginner/student/entry-level model.it's light. made by a company that's been around for years. ...though i still haven't heard of a model from this company on a recording or related to a known expert as far as i know.
or.....
and i think it must be carter month on the steels for sale area....
there are at least four fully loaded pro model carter d10's for sale. each for about $2000.
great working, sounding steels that are light and trouble free.
what am i missing? |

I think you're continuing to see the economy go down and with that people selling stuff they normally would not even consider. Trouble is, no one wants to part with money they normally wouldn't have a problem with spending.
I would love to have one of the Carter's, if for nothing more than experimenting with different copedents and/or tunings at home. But the way I see it, things are going to get a lot worse, if indeed it ever gets any better at all. This is not a political statement of any kind, just my world view (or rather 2 cents worth). I'm expecting Greece to start the domino effect any day now. So I'm keeping my money (and hopefully my job), and praying for better days.
My view, your mileage may vary. |

Apologies to the manufacturers, but I don't see the logic in paying full price for a brand new economy model when the same money can get you a professional level instrument with little or no mileage. Buying from a reputable dealer such as Jim Palenscar and/or a respected Forum member who can set it up to your specs makes it an even better option, imho. |

The new Mullen econo/flight guitar
http://www.mullenguitars.com/Econo.htm looks like a very good deal to me in your price range. Mullen makes a great steel. They had an economy model years ago Billy Cooper was selling that played and sounded every bit as good as there full on pro models.
Also the new BMI flight econo model looks very promising and is well under $2000.
I'm starting to get more fly dates and the new class of light econo type steels builders are coming up with look good to me. I paid $500 in baggage last trip to Europe. That can mean the difference between the band carrying a steel player or not. I would also keep an eye out for used EMCI and Carter steels. There is something nice about buying a new instrument though.
Williams and Jackson make a top level flight type guitar but they are up above $3000.
I can easily say that if you are are looking for a perfectly crafted new instrument you will be very happy with Mullen. _________________ Bob |

Its a buyers market for used steels indeed. I dont think Carters are being sold because the company isnt making any more, but only that folks need to sell them for cash these days. They are excellent steels in general, and Im sure many would love to buy one if they could, but cant, for the same reasons.

Buy the best used pro guitar you can afford. "Search" the forum for the "market price" of guitars (similar to the one you are interested in), that have recently sold.
If you do your homework, the guitar you buy will have already maximally depreciated in value. Just remember, due to this lame economy, it's a BUYER'S MARKET. |

One major question; Do you need/want both necks? Most don't. The economy has been hit and Mullen made a guitar to help those out who want a professional single neck at a more affordable price.
Buy whatever you want.. It is your money your spending right? Quesion I might ask. What do you do in 5-10 yrs when your guitar needs something? or 20+ with the Mullen, but anyway, will there be someone to help you. I wouldn't go buy a brand new car from a Company that is no longer in business.
Spend on folks. It is up to us to save the World!! |
