That's the great Bobby Nichols on steel. He was one of my favorites. Nice bass playing, too. I swear, Rock and Roll came out of Hawaiian music. Listen to Elvis' vocal delivery--totally Hawaiian influenced. I've never heard anyone say it, though. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Any Idea what they were useing back then for tuning on a six string lap steel. I was only 4 in 1937 and I have probably forgot if I ever knew and that is not likely? |

As far as I know, from asking and nosing around is that the original tuning for the steel was Taro Patch: D G D G B D, like the slack key guys used. In LA in the 30's, the 6th tuning arose. Sol Ho'opi'i ued what he called a C#minor tuning - an E6, actually. The 6th tuning spread through Hawaiian and countrty pretty quickly: E6, G6, C6, D6, etc. |

Thank you John. Presently I have my 8 string tuned top to bottom [E B G# E C# B G# E] I just call it a modified E7th. and since I do not read music and learned by reading TAB. or by Ear. I find my self rather restricted. In my younger years I used E7th. I liked that but changing the 5th string "D" TO "C#" I get a minor, but all I know is that the string is tuned to a "C#" Well I've blabbed long enough. Have a Good day. |

As I am fond of saying, C#min7 is E6, which Don Helms, among others, used. Sol Ho'opi'i called it C#min7, too. IMHO, 6thd tunings are very useful for non-pedal steels and for the lower neck of a D10 pedal steel, too. |

John, it's a different tuning. It is essentially an E tuning with the second string raised to C#.
Don Helms used an E6 that had the C# and B strings next to one another. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |
