Weak first string

Post by Gary Mortensen »

On my E13 neck, the first string is a .010 and its output is weaker than the other strings - the PU is a George L E-66. I think I understand the problem, that there's just not that much iron in that skinny little string to drive the pickup.
I'm thinking that this problem is fairly common, and I'm wondering if there are any workarounds that I'm not aware of. I guess a PU with adjustable polepieces would help, correct?
For now, I just try to add some right hand "equalization", with limited success.

Try a heavier string, I've tuned .012s to G and G# without issues..

I'll try that, Steiner! My 1st sting is a G# with a 24.5" scale...

I just bumped my Melobar CC-8 up to a .013 first....helps a bit. Any more and the string wouldn't vibrate enough, I expect....

My finger has learned to just pick that string harder...
