As of late we been doing a lot of talking about the death of steel guitar. And since then I have heard many different styles of playing that I didn't even know a steel guitar could do.Mike Nolans stuff was cool.So I would like to hear any new stuff, or different kinds of steel guitar including country stuff.I work like a sugarmill jackass to learn this stuff. So post some of what you think is some awsome steel guitar.Check this out.

Yeah Elton, that's Buzz Evans. Look for some of his other stuff like Pink Panther theme on there too. Awesome player in a lot of styles.

BTW, you need to fix your link. Just put a space between that last period after "out" and the url link address.

Thanks for the post.

If you're really interested in hearing the steel in different context get ready, I'll be sending you some links and I'm sure others will as well. You probably won't love everything you hear. I don't either, but I think it's great you're open to listen.

I'll start with this one. Bruce Kaphan from a CD titled Slider. Not your run of the mill pedal steel piece.

Elton, I hope you get as many hits on this thread as the one about death of the steel guitar. My fear is you won't. I find that there are not enough folks that believe in the steel guitar beyond what it has already done. I truly think some folks believe it has already seen it's peak. I, of course, disagree. I get discouraged when I hear and see the same old things being discussed and followed on the Forum. I know you have followed some of my threads and have commented kindly before. I can send post some of my more "out there" styles with You Tube links here if you like.

Great idea to promote some different styles regardless of genre. There is a wealth of them out here.

Stay tuned,

Zane

No idea where you've been looking but.......................

Every time I visit YOU TUBE, I discover still another jewel, featuring a steel guitarist about whom I've never before heard or more songs by long forgotten artists.

Have you truly examined that sight?

The Hawaiian Steel Guitar Assn., also features a bunch of steel guitarists and their music. Have you been there before?

I am really interested in hearing steel in different styles. One of my favorites is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puJ-YGo0 ... re=related
From doom metal pioneers Earth.

Then
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTMR69pzGk0
American music club was a "slowcore" indie band from the 90's based out of San Fransico. I forget if it's Bruce Kaplan who played with them but American music club albums are full of great steel.

And actually my favorite band has a few tracks with some cool steel on them. Red house painters. The steel comes in at around 3:50
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1tZavRpEbk

And then I love both versions of this song. Scott Walker is by far the greatest vocalist of all time as far as I'm concerned. And The fine Neko Case is another of my favorite vocalists, who did a fine cover. And both have some cool steel that fits the song just fantastically.

I've been really into what Susan Alcorn has been doing for quite awhile. I really wish I could find a recording high quality sound recording of her playing with outsider music legend Jandek. here's a pretty overloaded recording.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eK2601A ... re=related

And there is a fantastic post-metal band called Red Sparrows who feature pedal steel pretty prominently.

I couldn't find any video examples but Johan Jansen's "Head Back in the Clouds" CD has some very nice E9th playing but in a different context. Some hot pickin' as well as subdued pieces with a great band.

I go back, over and over, to these two; you have to poke along the right side to hear all six, the sheer variety of the Japanese guys is amazing, and, they're doing things that no one else is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbLqRh7_aiM

And, of course, Dave Easley - he plays with such power and so many tools, and a "freedom from licks" that reminds me of a very select few who play music, not instruments:

Edit: I fixed the Easley link

Here is a song from a soon to be released CD by a local singer songwriter I have been working with. Lots of steel. Name the genre if you can. I cant.

Oh, how could I forget about Japancakes. One of the guys in my band turned me on to this cause. They are fantastic. and there's amazing steel on almost every track!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSXo0m38ZCs

And even though we've all heard the song thousands of times I always forget there's such great steel on the song til I hear it again.

Here's another track with some great understated steel. If I could only listen to one artist for the rest of my life it'd be this man.

Thank you guys so much. And Micheal Daly for the cd.As I advance with my steel playing, what I have decided to do instead of going back to the beginning of steel playing and learn those licks even tho I have learned a great deal from them is to take some of this stuff and develope my style with some newer music. We played a gig one time with just our original stuff and every one just looked at us like a tree full of owls.I learned right then you have to play some other stuff they know so they have something to compare it to.I know a lot of us don't care for some of the modern country music,But I have to play what folks will pay to come listen to.Every lick I learn seems to lead to another one.So maybe I can sew some of this stuff togather. Thanks
