Hello Fellow Pickers,
I Really need some help, trying to figure how to fix the DVD player/Recorder, That has quit working In my computer.
The Problem That I Have Is I Put In a DVD and It Makes a Spinning Noise Like It's starting Up, Then It stops for a few seconds & Starts again & After about 5 Minutes Waiting for it to start Nothing Happens, But The DVD Is supper Hot When I Take It Out Of The Drive???'
I Have Tried Loading New Drivers & The Scanning Progran saids that my current onesare Up To Date??.
Last Night I spent all night loading different "DVD Player programs, but None of them helped & they only wanted me to pay their $29.95 or $39.00 Fees, Don't think so!
I ran a Program that said that Said That I had 5 Drivers Out three of them had to do with A program called, NVIDIA nForce System Management & Management Controler??, and USB Mass Storage Device, I'm at Wits end!!..lol...
I Have a HP Pavilion dv-7 9000, with a TSST Corp CD DV DW TS-6632Nata Drive, Running Windows Vista, IE-9. The DVD Won't Record Or Play, I Really Just Need It To Play, So That I Can Play Instruction DVD's, To Learn Songs On My Pedal Steel Guitar.
I Thought Getting A Portable DVD Unit Would Help?, as I Am A Disabled Veteran (On Full Time Oxygen), & Make Quite a few Trips To The VA Hospital 60 Miles & Though That I Could Watch the DVD's on The way Down There and Back , Then My Granddaughter could use It When I did Not Need It?. I'm Just at a Lost as I Really don't have the Money to Have this Computer Repaired Or Replaced (Being On A Fixed Income-Not Much Left At The End Of The Month!!..lol..).
Any Assistance would be welcome, Thank You, Blessings, "Keep On Pickin", From The Land Of OZ-♫Howie-"The Wizard"♫ ☺ _________________ Italia Maranello Gold Sparkle Guitar/6-string Lap Steel Guitar (LDG-Green)-Custom Made By Andy Hinton, (August 10, 1933 - July 3, 2011). There are a couple of things to try.
First, go to the Device Manager and see if there is an error showing for the drive, and post the error code if there is one. That can help in problem resolution, such as a Code 19.
To access the Device Manager, hold the Windows key down and press the Pause/Break Key. Device Manager can be accessed from the Panel that comes up.
There are no extra drivers for CD/DVD drives, just the built in Windows drivers so that is the reason you couldn't find any or any updated drivers.
The first thing to try, in the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the drive to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the drive. This fixes a lot of flakey problems with devices.
Post back with the error code, if there is one, and if the uninstall fixed it or not. |

Good Evening Mr. Stoner,
Thank you for taking the time to Help me with this "Beast from down below"..lol..
I did as you stated and went to the "Device Manager", and "DID NOT" find any "ERROR CODES".
**I Ran a second Scan and Found a "CODE 10"
Before I seen your post, I had just finished going though all the Items in the "Device Manager", and checked each Item for a "Update Driver", The Computer found "Three" and updated them under the "NVIDIA nForce Management and Controler, and updated them. I then restarted the computer, But the DVD Player still wont Play a DVD?
**OK, I "Unstalled the CD/DVD progran", restarted my computer, It uploaded the new program driver. The DVD still wont play a DVD, Now Under Updates, I got one for the NVIDIA nForce Management, I ran the Window's update & It "Failed", It Now shows a "Error Code "21 results for "WindowsUpdate_80070103"", Will Not Upadte?.
What should I try Next?, (besides a Big hammer??)..lol.
Thank You again, Sir for any assistance you can provide me with!!, Blessings, At Wit's end", ♫Howie♫ _________________ Italia Maranello Gold Sparkle Guitar/6-string Lap Steel Guitar (LDG-Green)-Custom Made By Andy Hinton, (August 10, 1933 - July 3, 2011). First, the NVIDA nforce update probably has nothing to do with why the optical drive is not working properly. Second, as I noted there are NO drivers for the optical drives (CD/DVD drives) other than the built in Microsoft Windows drivers.
A code 10 says the driver is not loaded for the device, but you don't say what device is getting the code 10. It also could be because the device is disabled in the BIOS.
As you uninstalled and it was reinstalled when Windows started, load a disc - any disc, a data CD, and audio CD, a DVD and then go to My Computer, the drive should be displayed, click on the drive to open it to view the contents of the disc, to see if shows anything. |

Good Morning Mr. Stoner,
I'm Sorry I Did not make my self Very Clear, all the "Error Codes" that I got yesterday was directed to the NVIDA nforce update, and Not anything else. I have since found and updated these 3 programs, anong with the Adobie Reader X. They are all running as normal now, sorry for the confusion.
I then followed your next step..."the The first thing to try, in the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the drive to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the drive. This fixes a lot of flakey problems with devices."..after doing this, the did "Reinstal the drive", and now say's that It is Working Normal, (No Codes), But I still cannot get a DVD to start?. The "Device Manager Shows".."This device is working properly".
Saturday Morning Upadte.
I will try this next!
"As you uninstalled and it was reinstalled when Windows started, load a disc - any disc, a data CD, and audio CD, a DVD and then go to My Computer, the drive should be displayed, click on the drive to open it to view the contents of the disc, to see if shows anything".
I tried the above and when I went to "My computer", I clicked on the "Drive" to view the contents of the disk, but all it did was to "Go White" & at the top it showed "Not Responding?". Still not working??.
***Mr. Stoner, It appears that My DVD Player/Recorder Laser Beam No longer works & needs replacing!, But I just can't afford it at this time!, The Most that I can hope is that someone has a "Portable Flip-Type DVD Player, That they no longer want or need??".
I Really would like to thank you for you Time, Info & Fellowship, This has really helped me to understand my computer better!!, It's People like you that makes me glad that I am a member of the SGF!.

Howard, maybe trying a new DVD reader might help. Have you tried to exchange it for another one known to work to see if it's just the reader or a program or a driver in your computer? I've been fixing computers for something like 20 years and more and I have a few leftovers that could help you, among them a black front plate DVD reader/writer from BenQ. If I have your address, I would gladly send it over to you (not knowing how much it would cost to ship it) if you're able to replace this gizmo yourself in your computer.
Honestly, reading your first post, I think your laser beam is shot and would have to be fixed, repaired or changed. Knowing the price of actual DVD readers, and since the newer generation with Blue Ray has come out, a new DVD reader is very affordable and it's not worth it to try to repair an old (5 years of more) reader.
In conclusion, you might either try my offer (and wait 'till it clears the borders) or go at Staples, for example, and get a new DVD reader. They're so cheap now that they don't even offer DVD readers only, all you can buy is DVD reader/writer devices.
Could this help you? Up to you...

Good Afternoon Mr. Alain-Yves,
I Got To Thinking what you wrote, and I tried the DVD's in my wife's Computer, (she keep's It under lock & Key, that she uses for Her "RN Nursing School Studies"), and the DVD's played with No problems.
So as you said it looks like my "Laser Beam is shot", Also, after just a minute or two in the DVD reader, and the Disk is so hot it's hard to hold?.
I appreciate your offer, However I really don't have any money at the moment, (being on a Fixed Income), I Can't Afford to Replace this DVD Reader/Writer!.
That is why I put a Thread In the "Wanted section", looking for a "Portable Flip-up Type DVD Player", I think this would be easier for me to use while viewing DVD's trying to learn new songs on my PSG. (As I Am Disabled & On Full time Oxygen, So My Hose, sometimes gets in the way of the Computer & Guitar.. ..).
I really would like to thank you for your Wonderful Info, It has made Me Understand that I can no longer use this DVD Player/Recorder in my computer!!!.
Maybe somebody Just might Have One Of Those Portible DVD Players they No longer need or want & Could Help A Brother Out???.. .
Thank You Again For Your Offer & Help!!.

Howard,
I did not mean "sell it" to you, I meant giving it to you for free and sending it over to you. This is something I picked up along the years and it could help you if it was in your computer. Here, it just stands in the basement and my wife gives me some funny looks when she sees this material. I just don't know how much it would cost to send it where you live but I'd be ready to absorb the costs just to help you.
Your call...
