Forever Studios Hollywood will be taping and assembling a documentary film "The J Lever" at ISGC this year. It is not only a tribute to the late great Jeff Newman, but it will also detail the evolution of the steel guitar from Hawaii to the modern day mechanisms, setups, manufacturers, players, milestone recordings, and of course the wonderful online steel guitar community.
If you or anyone you know has good stories or footage or historical knowledge of the instrument, players, recordings, onstage performances, backstage monkey business, etc. We will be trying to schedule some video taped interviews at either the Millenium or the Marriot Hotel.
The purpose of this video is to raise public awareness of the evolution of this wonderful instrument and to pay tribute to the greats of the past so that it may continue into the future. It will be available as a DVD and may even make it to PBS. Proceeds will go towards Jeffran College, the Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame and The Steel Guitar Forum.
See you in St. Louis.....

Here is a status update on the project. I went M.I.A. for a couple weeks because my father passed away the Saturday Night of the convention
The camera crew i was promised didn't show up thursday or friday
I was losing hope and focus as it seemed it wasn't going to happen
Forum People as well as some players started asking me about this "documentary". Everyone seemed real enthusiastic and began to come out of the woodwork
I hired some independent cameramen/lighting people and got started shooting saturday in the early evening
The interviews went real well, we had to move rooms quite a few times and conditions were not optimal(noise, background, etc.).
Everything went real well up until midinite when i checked my messages and had found out about my dad. i din't have time to grieve as the next camera person came in and we shot until 4:20 am.
We started early the next morning and continued til we ran out of tape.
There are still interviews I would like to get with players and some manufacturers.
As I had a preliminary agenda I needed to stick to.
I am also still looking for live footage and photographs.
Interviews so far now include:
Sara Jory, Doug Jernigan, JD Mayness, Larry Sasser, Bud Carter & John Fabian(Carter Guitars), Randy Beavers, Scotty, Russ Hicks, Hal Rugg, John Hughey, Buddy Charleton, Joe Wright, Bobby Black, Jonathan Chandler(11 year old wonderkid)
Between everyone the material and topics are incredible (history, tunings, pedals, setups, influences, recordings, backstage antics, Jeff Newman and his jokes, the conventions, milestones, etc...)
I really feel this is coming together well and am so excited about getting the rest together. It will be much groovier than any History Channel m-16/battleship documentary. I could use some funding if anyone like fender, peavey, CMT, GAC, Discovery or PBS feels like kicking some more down. It must be done top notch.
Special thanks to Fran Newman, Laney Hicks and Ann Fabian. You all made it happen in a big way. Way to talk to the boys. Thanks also to Mike Brown and Kimbo from Peavey, Bruce Zumsteg, Ron lashley and Emmons, Peterson Tuners, Bud Carter and John Fabian (Carter Guitars). A special big thanks to Scotty to allowing me to do this at the convention. Of Course thanks to all you players who participated in the interviews.
More to come........

Rand,
VERY well done! Great video quality, did you shoot using DV?
You should be proud that your product is high-quality. I'm sure your father would be proud, too.
cheers,
Drew

thanks guys for checking it out and your feedback......and remember this is only the ultra compressed web version your seeing.
we had really nice high end pro DV cams and some good lighting and camera men that really knew what they were doing. I just came up with the questions and the steel players really just opened up.
I had mailed the tapes unseen home from the marriot and was so worried something would have had to gone wrong ( xrays, bad lighting, camera mans thumb).
just the tip of the iceberg, i would really like to add in some vintage analog footage of these guys in playing the heat of battle.
