The Jones Boys changes

Post by Leigh Howell »

Nancy Jones has a post on Facebook concerning the Jones Boys signing their new contract, and two of them didn't sign And were terminated. The two were Tom Killien--Steeler, and Kent Goodson, Keyboard.

That's really too bad. Anymore, singers who have reached icon status might just as well go ahead and sing to tracks. These days, having a band doesn't seem to add any value for most fans... :\

There could be a multitude of reasons why they didn't renew their contracts. I consider Tom a friend of mine, and I wouldn't want to see any unnecessary conjecture here concerning his reason for leaving the group. He is an incredible steel player and I'm sure whatever decisions he makes are based on what does and does not work for him, both professionally and personally. I haven't spoken to Tom in a while, but I wish him well in all he's doing.

Best wishes to Tommy and Kent !
I would think after that many years, they would be happy to stay in town.

In Nashville? If that was a viable option, I'm sure many more players would do it.

I guess I'm one of the oldest members of the "Forum", being that I can remember when there wasn't a "George Jones" and the first time I saw him in person was at a park in N.E. Ind. (Buck Lake Ranch)and the "Adams Bros." were his back up band. Jones has been a favorite singer of mine since then, but nobody will ever convince me that he is easy to work with on the road. In my opinion he has lost a good part of his show. It would be like taking Paul Franklin off of all the A sessions. My opinion only.DW

Are there enough fans in the audiences now to really make any difference even if they cared ?

Last time George Jones played the Alabama Theatre here in Myrtle Beach the show was only half full.

To shed some insight on that,, Eddie Miles is a Elvis impersonator he sold out.

It seems there is alot of tarnish on George's star. Its too bad

George isn't as young and probably doesn't sing as good as he use to. George Jones is still a legend and will aways be a legend in country music! :) Hit after hit and thank goodness we still can hear him today......"He Stopped Loving Her Today" is noted to be the best country song written and sung!

I have seen George atleast 25 times. That is the problem. The younger generation has no Idea what real country is. Its all older people at the shows. I am 38 and probly the yougest there.

The performer is not the persona, and while we are sometimes bigger fans than non-players,we do get to see more often than many that having feet of clay is an almost inevitable consequence of idolhood.

Didn't GJ once empty his bladder on somebody's steel during a show?

Alot of what we like is what we've grown up with.

Sorry for Tommy, but that's the nature of the entertainment industry. If you want job stability, look elsewhere.

I wish Van Coffey an enjoyable tenure w/ G.J. I knew Van years ago when he played in PDX. Nice guy....great player. He deserves the gig.

Bobbe has given us a couple of links about the firing fiasco. The first is to Kent Goodson's website, where there's a concise, very non-judgemental recap of the situation that shows just why his ex-boss did NOT need to can him.The other is to a local paper in Goodson's hometown, where he's interviewed (obviously before he got the axe!)about an upcoming GJ gig.In the comments following the interview, someone posted a YouTube of
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" from March of this year.GJ's voice is as rich and resonant as ever;he just has no lung function left and has to breathe every couple of words. He's pretty good at breathing in strategic places, but I wouldn't advise any of the Jones Boys to count on long-term employment.
