Just recently I came into posession of a beautiful ShoBud "The Professional" D-10 8 and 4, and this is the first time I have ever had a chance to really look one over. Before I really mess up, I would appreciate some advice from those of you who are familiar with the guitars as to the proper method of tuning the pedals on the guitar. Is there a sequence that should be observed. Someone once said " There are no DUMB questions, just DUMB misteaks." I am fully capable of making "DUMB misteaks" but would rather not.

Thanks,

Sam

Hi Sam, if you have the tunable split on the 6th string do this.

First tune the G# to A with the top nylon tuner, then from that "A" note tune to "G" with the lower nylon tuner, then tune the G# to F# with the middle nylon tuner. Smile

Professionals usually did not have/use nylon tuners
they had the barrels for tuning & the female allen head on the end of the rod for tuning
it's important to set the barrels first & allen heads for the fine tuning second
the barrels are underneath on the rods up against the "racks"
commonly known as the " rack & barrel " system :

to tune the barrels you have to loosen them from the rods first & turn them so that they are in the middle which means that they have approx 2 or 3 turns to go either sharp or flat ( left or right) once you have set/tuned the barrels, you tighten them back on the rods up against the "racks" leaving a bit of slack & not tight up against them
once that's done, you tune the guitar open & then tune pedals & levers w: the male allen wrench in the window on the right of the steel

BEFORE PUTTING THE ADJUSTABLE BARREL ON, SCREW THE
BARREL CLOCKWISE UNTIL IT BOTTOMS OUT: THEN TURN COUNTERCLOCKWISE
FOUR COMPLETE REVOLUTIONS. THIS WILL ALLOW
THE BARREL TO BE ADJUSTED EITHER IN OR OUT.

these are the barrels :
it's the bottom part that's up against the spring that you turn & set
the barrel turns on itself

My friends, you have been a great help. My guitar is the "rack and barrell" guitar and I have had no experience with them, but thanks to you fellows, I think I can make it now. It's strange that in nearly 60 years of playing steel guitar, I have never owned a ShoBud. I'm very anxious to play this one. It has the "split coil" pickups and sounds great.

Kevin, thanks a million for posting the pictures for me. It's a great guitar. The fret boards have a few dings in them but I ordered new ones from Bobbie and a new pedal board decal, then she will be perfect.

First follow Crowbear's instructions. Then when you're tuning your pedals and levers they have to be fully engaged while turning the allen fittings on the tuning rods. If it's really out of tune and you can't seem turn the rod enough to get where you need to be, you can adjust the stops to give more or less travel, or slide the barrel on the rod in the direction you need to go. You don't want to have to make too many turns on the barrels to get where you want to be.
