I would like to know how high off the floor you have your pedals. Mine are about 1 1/2" but they feel like they are too low, and hard to press down at that height.

Also how far away from the strings should the pickup be? I have a 1974 MSA SD10 with a single coil pickup.

If you have a heeled sole, you might like the pedals higher.
Its a matter of personal preference and they are generally very easy to adjust.
Notice that on many steels the pedals are all at slightly different heights to begin with.
2 quarters stacked should be roughly enough space between the pickup and strings.

I left mine just the way they came out of the box.
Of course mine is a Carter Starter but it sure does
play just fine oh fine oh. My old Sho-Bud had to
be adjusted on til I got them where I wanted them.
It is a matter of trial and error, on you part and
what makes you feel comfortable. I will only tell
you to adjust them to where you believe they sound
and feel best. Then get your biggest critic to
listen to them and offer some constructive, note I
said constructive critisism, not sarcasm.
Good luch to ya.

Pedal height is somewhat a personal thing --- but they don't want to be so low that they hit floor before they activate the change !!

On most of the guitars I adjust out I like the pedals to stop approx. 1 inch off of the floor. Any higher and you start torquing down on the body and stressing parts, lower than that and the feel gets mushy and you probably will get into most carpets or even hard floors. However, that distance may change slightly depending on your shoe length and type of shoe used when playing. Its all about how far your heel is from the pedals, a matter of leverage.

Buddy Emmons once told me that he likes his humbucking pickups as close as possible to the strings w/o them hitting the top or buzzing.
A standard setting for single coils seems to be the thickness of a quarter from bottom of the string to the top of pickup on plain strings and maybe a hair more on the bottom end wound strings.
Make sure as well that your p/u is level as you look at it from the front side, too far back toward the changer and it thins out the tone, too far forward and you lose highs.
Hope this helps.
sincerely,

MC
