Just finished setting up my old MSA last night. I was resigned to the fact that I'd never get the other three pedals the guy said he had for it so I went ahead and set 'er up.
It's tuned in an extended E9 universal of sorts. The second and 9th strings are tuned to C# and the rest is standard extended E9....This must be one of the first wood body Classics as it's only a double raise/lower changer........
Here's some shots I took of it this morning on my deck. It was originally an emerald green finish but it's faded and aged to a light brown with a greenish tint.
The only thing I'm missing is the G# to A raise on string eleven but I didn't get enough bellcranks to put that one on. Also I was missing one long rod so as you can see from the picture of the bottom of the guitar where I bent a couple of loops in two shorter rods and hooked 'em together....... I'm going to take it to the gig next Tuesday night and break 'er in..........JH in Va.

Jerry & Ron,
What copedent do you each have on 5 & 5? I read what Jerry wrote, and am still confused. I'm looking for useful ways to set up my Marlen PR 12.

mine is mostly standard emmons except Tom Bradshaw added a pedal mount on the far left for P0, which is the franklin pedal so A,B,C pedals are in the same place as from Factory,P5 lowers G#s a 1/2,left knees are the E's,RKL 2 & 9 strings ,RkR 1st and 7th raises ,Vert Knee lowers the B's 1/2 _________________ MSA S12 Classic XL 5/5

Many thanks, Ron.
My pedals are similar to yours, with P0 and P5 swapped. That way I can use 5 + A together for some minor sounds. (I first learned steel on a chromatic tuning without pedals.) Also, it looks like the 2nd string will be C# instead of D#. (Same reason: I'm still a four note chord kind of guy, and it's easier to do raises on the PR.)
Also, since I learned pedal steel from Jeff Newman's courses, my E's are on the right knee. Remaining knees are about the same.
Jerry,
Mike Yahl can make that missing bellcrank and the rod for you if the other guys don't have one. _________________ 1974 Marlen S-12 1968 Tele 1969 Martin D-35H |

Jerry, from the silk screened fretboard, I'd guess that the guitar was made between 1977 and'79.
Jim Palenscar and Tom Bradshaw both have huge collections of parts, and Jim has a machine shop so he can make anything you need that he doesn't already have. I think Tom can make parts too. You should talk to them.
I think Linkon Steel Guitars in Canada also has a lot of MSA parts.
You're gonna love that guitar. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Jerry,
I am still hopeing you will chime in and tell us how you have the guitar set up. I'm not clever enough to tell by looking at the rodding.
Thanks! _________________ 1974 Marlen S-12 1968 Tele 1969 Martin D-35H |

Glenn, I can't get a copendant posted on here anymore so I'll just tell what each lever or pedal does..........
The basic tuning is:
F#
C#
G#
E
B
G#
F#
E
C#
B
G#
E........
LKL...Raises the 2nd string C# to D# and lowers the 10th string B to Bb
LKV....Lowers the 5th string B to Bb
LKR....Raises both the 2nd and 9th C# strings to D
P1....Lowers the 3rd string G# to G and raises the 7th string F# to G#
P2....Normal "A" pedal raising both B's to C#
P3....Normal "B" pedal raising the 3rd and 6th strings G# to A. I'll be adding the 11th string G# to A as soon as I can...
P4.....Raises the 5th string B to C# and the 6th string G# to A# (Bb)
P5.....Lowers the 7th string F# to F and lowers the 12th string E to C#, this pedal works with both the RKL and RKR
RKL...Raises the 4th and 8th E strings to F
RKR...Lowers the 4th and 8th E strings to D# (Eb)
My 12 string BMI has three additional pedals which are as follow...
P6.....Lowers the 9th string C# to C, the 10th string B to Bb and the 12th string E to Eb
P7.....Raises the 1st string F# to G and lowers the 11th string G# to F#..
P8....Is my main "Mooney" pedal and just raises the 4th string E to F#. It also will raise the 8th string E to F# but I usually leave it tuned out as it makes the pedal to stiff..........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Thanks, Jerry. That's much clearer to me now. There are many similarities between your setup and mine. Looks like 12 str "universal" is getting more universal all the time.
