I have a friend whom I can't help but feel has pedal steel guitar written in his future at some point.

My best friend, Daniel Arcuri, doesn't play any instrument, but he loves pedal steel guitar just as passionately as any steel player ever could.

I'll go to his house to visit and he'll be watching TV on one side of the room while I surf around on YouTube on the other; he'll hear the steel and say "That's an Emmons" or "That's a Mullen" on down the line through other guitars like Sho-Bud, Rains, MSA, ZB and ZumSteel, etc., and (sure enough) that's usually exactly what the guy in the video will be playing. He hardly ever misses his guess on what kind of guitar is being played.

He's also learned to recognize the different players. He'll hear a song on the radio and say "That's Paul Franklin" or "That's Dan Dugmore" or "That's Buddy Emmons" and so on. Funniest thing is, look up that song on the album and read the credits ... sure enough, he's usually dead on accurate about who was playing on that cut.

The two steel players whose playing Daniel recognizes the quickest are Paul Franklin and John Hughey.

Daniel has attended the last two Dallas steel shows with me and he had a great time (like a kid in a candy store). It's amazing how much he already knows about steel even though he doesn't own or play one.

At this year's Dallas show, Daniel got to briefly meet and say a quick "Hello" to Paul Franklin and he was so very proud of that opportunity. On the way to drop him off at his house when we left that night, he said, "Wow! I got to meet Paul Franklin!" Daniel really loves Paul's playing and getting to briefly meet him was, without doubt, the highlight of Daniel's visit to the Dallas show this year.

Daniel says he doesn't have any aspirations toward learning steel or becoming a player himself ... BUT ... he'll come over to my house and, like steel drawn to a magnet, he'll sit down at my rig and power it up and play around on it. Without any help from me, he started picking out the single note melody intro to "Cowboy Rides Away".

I have a feeling that, eventually, Daniel is going to become a new addition to the community of steel guitar players ... he definitely has the bug, he just doesn't realize it yet. Smile
