I'm only 24, but my guitar hero, Don Rich, was killed in a motorcycle accident thirty years ago today. I realize that he is not remembered as a steel player, but I feel certain that Ralph Mooney, Jay McDonald, Tom Brumley, Jay Dee Maness, Jerry Brightman, and countless other steel players who had the privilege of working with him through the years would all agree that he was and still is "Mr. Telecaster". Also, let's remember to pray for Mr. Buck Owens, as his health is declining. Comments anybody? |

Thanks for the timely reminder about Don Rich, Tay. I love his guitar playing, and loved his harmony vocals with Buck even more. Let's all play a lick in his honor at our next gig. |

Yes, Mr. Don Rich is a classic in my book.
Him and Buck Owens was a match for sure.
I hope Buck is around for a long, long time. |

I certainly remember where I was the night I heard Don died. He was a really dynamic influence on music at the time. |

Was up late watching TV and a commercial came on for Time Life Country CDs. The first shown was a video of Wynn Stewart with Don Rich on harmony and Tom Brumley on a ZB pedal steel. Probably from a Buck Owens Show. Jody. |

It was a sad day when Don's life was cut so short.
He was a great Talent and had lots more to offer.
I can't believe it has been 30 years.
I met Don in 1968 in Santa Rosa,CA.
It was a great loss for everyone.................al

First, Thanks to all of you who have remembered Don...and thanks for the really neat emails I have received. I truly beleive that he is seeing them.
Ray, you reminded me of one of my favorite times in the band. Ocasionaly, we would play a big dance hall, and that's when Buck would throw all of those great tunes in, and let Don play fiddle, guitar, and me play solo's in the tunes...What great memories you have reminded me of...I really miss Don.

To Mr. Jerry Brightman,
Thank you so much for posting your kind remarks about Don and sharing your many wonderful memories of him with us. It was such a privilege to meet you at the ISGC-2003 last year in St. Louis. The way I see it, meeting you and becoming friends will be the closest I will ever get to knowing Don Rich. I feel like I have been blessed to meet such wonderful folks like yourself who take such a great interest in young enthusiasts like me. Thank you for becoming my friend, Mr. Jerry!
Yours truly,

Jerry,
If we get a chance I would like to jam with you in St Louis ...maybe in the Fulwaka or Derby Room. I sing a whole bunch of Buck tunes and play guitar on those tunes in a "Don Rich-esque style" (my tribute to the man AND the songs).
It would be fun... last time we picked together it was I think in 2001 in the Fulwaka Room ...I was playing drums I think and Butch Cornwell and you were playing PSG.
I love that Don Rich tone, taste and high Harmony. Doyle does a fine job today with Buck...but it will never sound like "Dangerous Don"!
Thanks Jerry,

Tay,
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of playing drums on a set with Russ Hicks, Randy Beavers and your new friend Jerry Brightman at a steel show in Nashville. I had not seen Jerry in years. Doyle Holly was also there so that really made for alot of Buckaroo memories. A real treat for this not so young enthusiast. Thanks Jerry and Doyle for some great stories.
As a teenager, I played bass and sang harmony. I always sang Don's part(tried to anyway),while my buddy tried to copy Don's tele licks. I remember us laughing, saying it took two of us and we still couldn't get his job done. We were lucky enough to get backstage at a Buck concert and we told Don about the two of us trying to do his job. He thanked us for the compliment, smiled that big smile, then asked which one of us played fiddle. We all three broke out laughing. I guess it would have taken three of us to not do his job.??????????
There was never any player better suited for his job than Don. Tay, I love your enthusiasm, keep it up. Hope to see you at one of the steel shows.

Another friendly bump for this topic; I know I can't keep doing that, but I'm 24 years old and many of you folks were around back when Don was "the man". Please post a few more stories, or simply e-mail me at:

I love the Steel Guitar Forum! I would have never thought that I could learn so much from so many nice folks! I'm so thankful that I became a member last year. Please have pity for this 24 year old enthusiast; I'm just trying to soak-up all I can while I can. Somebody's got to carry the torch and preserve traditional Country music (not to mention the market for the steel guitar) after yesterday's legends are gone. SO, Y'ALL KEEP TALKING; THIS YOUNG BUCK'S A'LISTENING! |

I had the pleasure of seeing Don playing with Buck at the London Palladium. No Tom Brumley that time unfortunately, but without doubt the best tone I have ever heard from a Tele. No effects - just straight into a Fender Dual Showman stack and brand new strings. Wonderful!!!

I never saw Don without a smile on his face. Had the good fortune to have breakfast with him in Reno after a show at the Nugget and a little time at the crap table. Don is (not was) the quinticential side man. If you look up "side man" in the dictionary you find his picture. God bless Don Rich. |
