April 11th. in this part of the world means it is six years since Jerry left us to fend for ourselves and yet I thanked him the other night. Some audio tapes turned up on my desk, they were not mine, but one had Samoan singing, sounded like a home tape and out of the blue were about two bars of Hula Lady. I don't remember ever playing that one, couldn't find the tape I had made of the old 78 so I had to rely on memory, grabbed the uke, started in F, changed to C then G and had trouble getting back into F. Tried the guitar, changed to G, then C and still had trouble. It was a hot day, I was tired and gave it away. Next day, I was driving on the motorway, radio going and two words came to mind - " By Request. " When I got home had a look and sure enough, there it was tucked in between two others, taped it 3 in a row, sat down with my guitar, pressed play and Jerry was off like a rocket with me trailing about two miles behind. After a few tries I sort of caught up, found that it does not go back into a major, the first bar is solo and the first chord is the dominant 7th. But I got the road map, so to speak, found out where to go and how to get there, put the guitar down, stopped the tape and was quite surprised to hear myself say out quite loud " Thanks Jerry." |
