I'll be on Maui from April 9th-16th and on the Big Island from the 16th-23rd. If anyone knows where I can hear some steel guitar I'd sure appreciate a heads up.

Alan,
The Hawaiian Music scene is ever changing and it seems impossible to keep up with.
The following will probably be the best sources for getting the info on the Big Island and Maui:
For Information on Hawaiian music and steel guitar playing in Hawaii (Big Island), you can email Kona Bob at http://www.konaweb.com/mail/index.shtml or call him at 808-322-4714
For information on Maui, you may contact Henry Allen at henrykallen@aol.com or call him 808-669-6189. His wife, Sherron, may answer and she can give you the information.
Happy Hawaiian Memories.
Aloha,
Don |

Good luck finding any steel on those islands, Alan, Henry probably isn't playing anywhere. I don't know who's playing steel at these luau's, but it's about your only shot on Maui, and it comes with food and pretty girls in case the music sucks http://www.lahaina-family-vacation.com/old-lahaina-luau.html
Bob's about it for the isle of Hawaii.
In case you go to our other islands, it's nearly as bad... but try this www.hwnsge.5u.com
Too bad you leave just before all the May Day steel stuff. |

Alan,
You will miss a lot of Hawaiian Steel Guitar in Hawaii because the International Hawaiian Steel Guitar Assn Convention begins in Waikiki and happens on April 27-29. By the way this convention occurs every other year, the next being in 2013.
As Ron says, there is a lot of Hawaiian Steel Guitar on the May Day celebration in Kapiolani Park in Waikiki.
There are generally Hawaiian Steel guitar events every May Day in Hawaii.
Aloha,
Don |
