I want one and money is tight. I could do it but would like advice from anyone here who may have done so. I will not go all crazy with fancy binding or anything. I am thinking I should start with a maple or ash slab and going to it. Thoughts? Ideas? Advice?

Brian, a search on the Forum here should turn up a fair number of photos of home-built steels. You might also want to check out the Steel Guitar Builder's Forum:

I'm glad to see that you're having so much fun with these pieces of wood and steel. HTH.

Thank you, Michael! I am having a blast. And sooner than I might have thanks to you. My band is gigging out the first time with me on steel in three weeks.

A few years ago I built a D-8. I bought some curly maple for the body, but it was green and warped before I tried to use it, so I ended up laminating some oak from Lowes. I got the tuner parts and nut and bridge from Jim Flynn and used Jerry Wallace True Tone pickups. It plays better than I do. Laughing Laughing
