If you have to wear hearing aids, how do you compensate for the sound you hear? I just received some of the latest technology hearing aids from the VA and find I have these problems. These are my 3rd generation aids.
1. sound between left and right sounds like a delay effect.
2. tone/sound is terrible compared to what I think I hear without the aids (same problem with the earlier style also). The first 4 strings sound like they are "ringing" when played aboved the 8th fret.
3. My best option now is to take them out when playing, but that poses a problem when talking (hearing/understanding) with the leader.
Nothing here is professional playing, but it is the only game in this very remote area/town. |

I currently have "open" channel aids, which have a much less detrimental effect on what I hear. Previously I tried two different "sealed" or closed sytems, and never found a way to stand playing with them in, always took them out to play and made people repeat themselves when I couldn't hear! Also had a newer open pair to try where the two aids "talked" to each other, and really didn't like the effect very much: lots of weird sonic artifacts.
Not being able to hear properly really sucks.

I've lost about 90% of my right ear, left is still 96% good..I barely turn the aid on and have no problem with music or voice..Apperently, I'm mainly using my good left ear and the right (with the aid) is only adding clarity..
It's a low price aid BTW... |

When I first got mine about a year ago, the first time I played (aids in), I thought my amp speaker had a crack in it. Long story short, I finally realized my aids were being driven into saturation. Now, I only leave one in my right (worst) ear for bandstand talk purposes, and definitely make sure my amp is dominant on my left side. _________________ Rains D-10 by Gary Carpenter |

Looks like the majority of us older/better steel players have trouble hearing. I've had trouble all my life. I tried 2 pair of in canel hearing aids , Miracle Ear, they never did work properly. Finally went with a dfferent company and doctor. Got a pair of Phonak aids, that fit behind the ear. They work much better, just having to tweek them from time to time, about every 3 mnths. They have a music program on them. |

My wife has significant hearing loss and has been struggling with her hearing aids for a long time now. In case you aren't already aware of it, there is a great hearing aid forum and it seems like there are some super knowledgeable folks on there. (Not that most of us need yet another forum on which to spend our time but there may be some great input over there for some of you.) |
