In the wake of such love for the long semi-lost and now iconic 'Tapa Tapes', there's yet another Holy Grail of performances to be mentioned that needs to be heard by the adoring masses which has managed to survive the decades still in it's 70s quality audio but largely unheard since the night of the show, long ago, and even rumoured to not exist. Hopefully one of our willing/able members fortunate to have the show can post the complete audio for all to finally enjoy.
What's to be heard? In 1973, to celebrate both the surviving great Hawaiian steel guitarists and opening of the brand new Concert Hall built on the grounds of the 'Old Plantation' in Honolulu, an all-star concert was performed by Merle Kekuku, Joe Custino, Jerry Byrd, Lovey Loui, Pua and Johnny K. Almeida, Barney and Alvin Isaacs, George and Feet Rogers, backed by Benny Kalama and Sonny Kamahele. The sets are 3 songs short and highlites are constant, but Pua and his dad may have stolen the show. Missing from the event are David Kelii and Billy Hew Len to name two top steelers, Pua died shortly after, this may have been Jerry's major debut in Hawaii, and it's the only performances of Lovey and George I know to exist. This is a very special recording that I hope get's put up here. |
