This is my initial attempt at trying out the E13 tuning on my Excel Frypan. The Princeton Reverb seems to sound a bit better than the Vibro-Champ. I've put an original tune and a bunch of sound samples on the page. Hopefully there's a few new sounds here.

Hey! that was great! The frypan sounds good!
I have a Princeton Reverb black-face clone that I built a few years back. I'm not fond of the tone it has, and I'm doing some changes to it, like a different (read better) output transformer.
Great playing Greg ! |

Thanks Doug and Andy! I keep bumping the tone control on this Excel and so all the sound files were recorded with the tone control varying between bass and treble. The Princeton is definitely the best sounding amp I've ever owned.
Andy, I went through Bakersfield on my way to the Hearst Castle and was impressed at how nice the weather and area would be if I still had my motorcycle. A new Victory or Hog and your weather (no sunshine here most days) and I'd be a happy camper.
Bill, I had the reissue Princeton for a while. It's reverb was pretty horrible pry due to the reverb tank not matching the original design. I'm not averse to PC board designs but suspect that if you bought a good used, broken in, Princeton OEM speaker, you'd get a tone similar to what I am getting if you used an external reverb. After hearing the tone that Marty Stuart was getting out his Princetons on TV, I decided to take the Princeton plunge again. Of course since then I've learned that he uses a pair of Twin Reverbs on the road and gets a great tone that way also. I like the compact size of the Princeton and Champ amps and the warm tone at practice volumes.
Now I wonder how my old SuperSlide would have sounded through the Princeton.

Sounds great Greg! My Uncle has a Jerry Byrd frypan I hope to get someday. Any thing other than delay? |

Kevin,
Just amp reverb no delay at all on this song. These are great guitars to play while just sitting on the front porch or in front of the TV. Plenty of volume to practice acoustically.

Greg, I have a 12" Weber speaker in my PR. Same speaker I use in other amps, with great results. However, I did change an output trans recently in one of my other clones, resulting in great tone improvement. Went from a cheapie to a Hammond OT. That's what the PR is gonna get next. We'll see how it works...... |

W0W, caught the reverb but it sure sounded like some delay in the mix also Greg. Nonetheless, very nice job! |
