I've been asked to add upright bass to five tracks at a local project studio. It's pretty basic and simple material, and shouldn't take too long to lay down the parts. He's also interested in me maybe adding some resonator, too.

I was thinking of charging $50 per track, per instrument. So, any song with me playing both bass and reso on it would be $100/song. This seems like a fair fee to me, but I don't know...?

These are demo tracks for a client of his studio.

Thanks for your help!

At least start there, Todd. If he has more tunes then bargain a little.

For something like a small vanity project I usually charge a flat rate. In the case of what you're doing, 5 tunes on bass and then maybe a little extra reso, I'd probably ask for $250, maybe even $200, as it wouldn't take more than 2 hours or so. If it gets any more involved than that, then I will have to adjust accordingly.

Of course, a commercial project is going to get a higher fee (but not always, as sometimes they are the least willing to pay it).

Thanks, you guys! That really does help. I want to be comped for my talent/time, but want to be fair and within the general market price, keeping in mind today's crappy economy.

Thanks!

Why not start with the Musicians' Union handbook on
fees? It might give everyone a reasonable base from which charge.........

Fla is a right to work state and there are very few musicians that I know around the area that are union.

$50 to $100 for the first song is reasonable considering having to haul all the equipment and set it up, even with the "depressed" gig wages in this area. (I'm not too far from Todd).
