A local music store has an odd Dobro. It's a round neck with a magnetic pickup at the neck, is bright red, and has the Dobro decal on the peghead. It has an abbreviated neck heel, and a large (factory) bolt in the back that looks like it has something to do with the neck attachment. The pickup doesn't seem to be working, and I think that they're going to sell it fairly cheap.
Does anybody know about these guitars? _________________ "it's not in bad taste, if it's funny." - john waters |

I don't have any pictures, but I found a picture of a blue one. I think that the pickup in this picture is not original:

That would be one of the Mosrite era Dobro guitars, probably an Avalon. Notecannons has a Mosrite catalog that could help you narrow down which model you're talking about.
In general these guitars are not considered particularly collectible. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Thanks Brad, that's a big help!
As far as it not being "collectible"; that makes it "affordable"! _________________ "it's not in bad taste, if it's funny." - john waters |

John, I bought one of those "Mosrite" Dobros years ago and was going to raise the action and use it as an open G tuned guitar for Bluegrass type things but when I went to raise the nut I couldn't get the "nut extension" to work right because the guitar had a "zero fret". I knew a guy who had another brand who just played fretted Dobro things so we traded...........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Hello John,
This is my pretty Red Dobro. I like this guitar very much although adjusting intonation was difficult.
I use it as a round neck/take-off guitar as I have a Clinesmith and an eight string Dobro.
It is a good stage and personal guitar but not very loud as an acoustic.
Sorry to discourage but if you want to make this act like a square neck I'd steer you to an inexpensive Goldtone or some similar option.
The bolt on the back helps adjust the neck angle. |

Brad thanks for posting that link to the Mosrite catalogs. I spent many an hour as a kid drooling over those pictures especially the Uncle Josh model. |
