For some reason, I seem to be busy this summer and have a rare performance date in my home town.

For my Houston friends and fellow steel guitarists:

I will be performing this Sunday for

"Sounding Women"
July 11th at
Super Happy Funland
2610 Ashland
Houston, Texas
8 PM

sharing the bill with Rose Lange and Maria Chavez. I'll do a solo set and also a set with Rose and Maria. This is a benefit concert for Houston composer and music educator Edith Gutierrez .

Here is the press release for the concert:

Edith Gutierrez, a major presence in Houston’s musical world, piano teacher to many Houston students, composer of children’s musicals for Express Theater, founding member of the Houston Music Teachers Association, employee at the Houston Ballet, and mother of Pauline Oliveros, recently suffered a hip fracture. She is recuperating well, but now has $7,000 in debt due to the costs of home health care.

Susan Alcorn, composer and musician, plays pedal steel guitar. Her original music reveals the influence of free jazz, avant-garde classical music, Indian ragas, and folk/indigenous music of the world. Recent performances include the JazzTage in Leipzig, Germany as part of the Chris Cutler Project and the London Musicians Collective Festival of Experimental Music. She has played with Pauline Oliveros, Peter Kowald, and Eugene Chadbourne.

Maria Chavez is a Peruvian musician who creates improvised pieces focused on electro-acoustic sounds of vinyl and needle on turntables. She has performed with abstract trombonist David Dove, toured with Christina Carter, recorded with Kaffe Matthews, performed with Thurston Moore in her NYC debut, and is a part of the duo Fast!Fast!Cash! with visual artist/musician Donna Huanca. .

Rose Lange plays violin and viola, bringing her experience as a classical and ethnic musician to improvised music. She led the Vadrozsa Hungarian band in Seattle, then moved to Hungary, learned Roma (Gypsy) popular songs, and became an ethnomusicology teacher. She has played in gamelans on the East, West, and Gulf coasts. She has played with Phil Gayle and a number of Texas improvisers.
