-not precisely a "steel player" topic, but maybe a story that steelers can relate to...
As we were to begin our regular Hillbilly Idol, 3rd Thursday set at the Barking Spider Tavern in University Circle, an attractive couple sat down at a table next to me, the steel player. Granted, it was St. Patrick's day, and folks were in a partying mood, but the gal came straight over to the steel and excitedly reported that she had recently purchased a steel, had no idea to tune or play it, and felt that the cosmos had serendipitously drawn us together. Charming. Piquing my curiosity, she said that this particular steel had come through the Buck Owens band. Enthralled by the possible pedigree, I asked what it was, thinking that maybe on an outside chance that it was an old Fender or even a ZB. She reported that it was a Rus-Ler. Now I've seen Rus-Ler steels listed on the SG Forum but never taken the time to find out what's what with them, actually, I thought that they were student models, my mistake. She asked if she could get in touch with me so that she could get some heads up on how to tune and some instruction to get her up and running on the steel, and did I mention that she was attractive, -- I said sure. She also reported that she's presently a guitar player but fully intends to be a great steel player and is totally captivated by the sound of the steel. Well, on our break between sets I first made the rounds to talk to some good friends and when I went back to talk to the the Rus-Ler gal, she was gone. And so it goes, no proper introductions, no contacts, and that's that.
Not, having a familiarity with the Rus-Ler, I did a search on the Forum the morning after and found out just how very cool these steels were, their connection to the ZB and the many great steelers who had played them. I feel kinda bad now, - woulda loved to have seen that gal again, oops, I mean seen that steel and maybe lend a hand at getting a new steeler going.
-just another one of those late night bandstand stories that kinda leaves a guy with more questions than answers. |

If she is serious about the steel and needs advice or help, she will be back.
Now, with me, women usually come up to me and barf on my guitar and tell me how much they hate the steel guitar (or is it me?). Or they want to know the name of someone else in the band (damn!!). _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Hi John,
Yes, I can't help but feel a tinge of regret in this situation, just one of those things, but, probably a quotient of my age, I was actually a bit more interested in seeing the steel. ---just a bit.
Stevie C is apparently alive and well in Nashville. I have a copy of both of his solo band things -Johnny Microwave- they are both very fine albums. I hear an update now and then about Stevie's doings through our mutual friend Mike Daly. I could probably get a phone# from Mike and pass it along if you'd like. Below is a link to their MySpace page:

Also, I've lost track of Derek Hawkins, how about you? |

Hello Al!
I'll try my numbers for Steve one more time. I haven't talked to Derek in quite a while, but I do have his workin' number, which I doubt he would change. I'm sure he's still dealin' in vintage instruments. I know he owns a couple of houses, and my old drummer, Greg Brown, told me that the old reprobate finally got married!
Best,
