I am laying out a hollow body acoustic 8-string. I'm going for the Weissenborn look. Pre-war "Hawaiian" guitars had flared fingerboards: typical nut width maybe 1 3/4", and around 2 1/4" across the strings at the bridge, for 6 strings.

Appearance considerations suggest that I stick with the flared fingerboard, but moving into 8 strings has got me thinking about what's normal for wide boards. Do lap steels, pedal steels etc. have parallel strings, or does the spacing increase from nut to bridge? More importantly, is the increase problematic for your bar positions?

thanks
