I've been focused on C6 tunes for quite awhile and have not wandered off into other tunings, but tonight I spent learning Doug Beaumier's version of "How'D Ya Do" in B11 (B D# F# A C# E) ?

Doug Beaumier playing "How'd Ya Do" ....
www.playsteelguitar.com/HowDyaDo.mp3

I now need more tunes to learn in this tuning ! Can you guys recommended some...send URL's to youtubes, suggest titles etc. ? Love this tuning !!

Thanks !

Mitch, "Sand" is a B11 tune.

I posted some B11 info here on the Forum a while back you might want to check out ---> B11 Info

B11 is rich in 7th and 9th chords. It has a very distinctive sound. Great for Hawaiian and songs with a lot of 9th chords.

Hey Mitch, well here's a tune from last year when I was still living on Kauai, and taking a beginner course from Alan Akaka..could be the most famous B11 tune, Sand.

I'm up in L.A. now, I could get you copies

Roger,

That is Doug Beaumier playing on that mp3 I posted. Sorry for any confusion... I'm learning his version of it tonight and fell in love with B11 tuning !

Mitch

BTW, I belive Doug has said in previous posts that he played a Guyatone guitar on that particular track ? Maybe he can chime in and confirm ?

Yes, it's a 1960s Guyatone D-8, a Japanese copy of a Stringmaster. Unfortunately I sold it last year. The buyer has since sold it to someone else who has since sold it to someone else... so I've lost track of it. I hope to buy that guitar back someday because it has a very "ballsy" sound. Cool

Yes, B11 is a great tuning, "Sand" seems written for it, as does "How D'Ya Do" and others. It also surprisingly suitable in other tunes when the tune does not call for the famous 6th sound, or if the chord accompaniment structure has a preponderance of 7ths and 9ths.

"Unforgettable" by Alan Akaka was one that sold the tuning to me when he played it at the Marriot at Aunty Genoa's a few years back...

This is a question that comes up often, you can probably do a search through the new and old archives and find lots of suggestions.

Noel Boggs played some B11, too.

Hi,
I think you can, give it a try. On the other hand I love the deep strings very much.

Here is my Sand version with steel tuned to
E-C#-A-F#-D#-B-A-B

Hey, anyone happen to have an mp3 backing track for "Sand" (done in the key as in the vid ?)

PS: And Jerry's version of "How'D Ya Do":

I do a country song on B11 six string which works
very well I think. It provides a mixture of Hawaiian
and Country sounds. Mostly Hawaiian IMO?

Roy, love your interpretation of the country song!
Indeed, it sounds Hawaiian, probably the reason why I like it so much. It doesn't get better, havin' Country and Hawaiian in one song. Have you ever tabbed it?
