Gibson Console C-530?

Post by Steve Perry »

I'm on the lookout for a D-8 console for not a lot of money. $500 would be great and up to $700 is doable. Anyway, I came across this Gibson console at Gruhn's.

Image

Their description is this...

"1959, cosmetically EXC, 2 8-string necks, non-original pedals and knee levers removed leaving three 1/4" holes through body and multiple screwholes on the underside, double-coil pickups, replica knobs, OHC......$600"

I'm not concerned with the holes, just that it is playable and has decent tone. Would this be a decent steel for a beginner playing 50's Country and Western Swing?

That guitar could serve you well for the remainder of your life, without needing a second.
Too bad the original knobs are gone, at $250 apiece I wonder where they went...?

I'd jump on it! :) You can replace the knobs with something that you like better later. I've got a Gibson Console Grande that sounds wonderful. That one should sound wonderful too.

Sounds like a good deal to me, but I haven't seen the underside. Go for it!

Thanks all! 3 positives is all I need. I'm only 2 hours away from Nashville so I'll run down on Saturday and take a look at it. If it's not too boogered up, then I'll see about getting it. Anybody want to buy a red Tele??? :D

The pickups on these guitars are outstanding. You'll never regret buying this guitar. I own one similar to it and for the price you can't beat them.

Hey Guys!

If for some reason, this steel guitar is still up for grabs, I am trying to put together a western swing music concert with our Walnut High School Orchestra, here in southern California. I have a couple of wonderful musicians, who are really excited about learning the steel guitar - that is IF I can find one we can afford or get donated. What with all the budget cuts in education out here, things are pretty slim pickins!

This Gibson looks like it would be perfect for us!

Thanks!

You should post a separate message in a new discussion rather than appending it to the end of an existing discussion. That way you'll get more visibility and a higher chance of a response.

This particular guitar is still listed in Gruhn Guitars inventory, but you should contact them directly to see if it's still available. (615) 256-2033

Get them on the forum and make a rucus about the plans and needs, Doc, maybe you'll end up with more than just the Gibson.
Thanx for spreading the gospel!

Well, I guess my first posting on the site will have to include an apology. I've been looking for an affordable double neck for over a year (that wasn't Indonesian). I pulled the trigger on the aforementioned Gibson 530 at George Gruhn a couple of days ago and it arrived today. I started searching Gibsons and saw this post, so I apologize for stealing your steel, friend (having not seen this, I had wondered why this one had not been snatched). I just wanted a player for under a K. Not an easy thing to find. I've been watching and learning from this bulletin board for quite a while and hope to keep on learning. I've been toting a 6 string Supro Comet and a 6 string Guyatone for a year and am eager to move up to 8 string. So, I'm glad to be here and I hope I haven't caused our friend any heartburn. :)

Congrats on the new steel, Bruce! I'm the OP and there's no heartburn here. I was in the process of trying to sell a Tele to buy the steel... a Tele that I really didn't want to get rid of. So, it's a win/win. Enjoy!
