Topic: What's With These Awards? |

Have any of you ever won some award from some Association or Society? You know, like Best Flatpicker of 2004 from the Tri-State Memorial Flatpickers Society, or 2nd Place in the East-South-East Association of Left Handed Mandolin Players. Do these regional honors mean anything? Are they actually contests or are players nominated and voted upon? Just curious. I've never won anything but then again I don't enter contests.

| I have a trophy on my mantle for "bringing the coolest guitar" to the lap steel show at Steel Guitars of North Country. I've received other awards, but that one is really special. |

I won 2nd best guitarist in Anchorage a few years ago in the Anchorage Press,The kid that one first place is a cook at a sports bar,He's a really nice guy and was embarrassed because all of his friends loaded the ballet box,I myself was embarrassed because I can name at least ten guitar players better than me.

In 2003, I won 3rd place for steel guitar in the category "Best Miscellaneous Instrument" of the "Austin Chronicle Music Awards". I 'd like to think it was for my considerable prowess on the instrument (dream on Glenny-boy, dream on  ). Truth be told, it's a popularity contest. The general public is encouraged to vote as many times as they want, for whom ever they want. I thought it was odd, considering this was Austin, TX, that they didn't have a category dedicated to steel guitar. If they did, I probably wouldn't have even been a blip-on-the-radar.
The others that won first and second place were: 1st Place: John Pointer (human beatbox); 2nd Place: Abhinit Bhatt (tabla).
The one award I cherish: About 30 years ago, I won 1st Place for best halloween costume at an Austin roadhouse (The Courthouse Blues). The band I was playing with had a gig there and some band members decided to play in costume. I played the steel as a belly dancer.
Here's a picture my wife took of me, just before the gig. BTW: I also wore a stunning black wig.

I won the coveted award "Mostly Likely to Blow Himself Up in the Lab".
We pressure tested a lot of stuff to 2500 PSI. You don't want to be around a failing 6" pipe joint with questionable restraint at 2500 PSI. (600 lb class plus some...)
Glenn, I couldn't stay "in role" that long...

Its been my experince most awards are politicle
in nature,you know the good ol boy b.s. network.
and to Chas smith if you got an award from
steel Guitars of North Country,I would consider
this one of the most generous honest awards you
could recieve in the music business today.
Now thats a "Real award" and a real Honor! |
