Nice playing by that young man, I wish the left handed rhythm player had just used his acoustic sound as he was too loud IMHO. I saw a cord hanging from the back of his guitar so he must've been "plugged" in. One of the best sounding Hawaiian groups I ever heard was in SoCal about thirty years ago. There were three guys and a girl who sang and danced. The instruments were an archtop guitar playing all closed chords, a ukulele, and a D-6 lapsteel. Anyone know how old the steel player in this video is?..........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

He certainly has one of the best teachers, Uncle Ron.
And his sister, Emily, has the voice of an angel. I wish we had the funds to bring the whole Obriga family to Winchester this year. Something to think about next year. |

He seems to play very effortlessly. With my not so good eyes I did not detect him using any slants. Is this something yet to be learned ? |

Ron tells me he has 16 students. Uncle Ronald deserves much praise for his enterprise and the energy he devotes. I think it is not easy to capture the imagination of the young in Hawaii to play steel guitar, many of whom (erroneously) believe it is too difficult.... I am told that Alan Akaka is having similar success with some of his young students.
These are valiant attempts to continue the great tradition of steel guitar in the islands... |

This young steel player is Timi Abrigo, of Abrigoohana,
(Abrigo family in Hawiian) The "family" is the three Abrigo children, getting into traditionl Hawaiian music. Youtube has more on Abrigoohana. It's sort of the back-yard music like the Sons of Hawaii gang used to do, Gabby, Feet Rogers, etc. The young man's steel playing style has the Rogers influence, from his teacher, Ron. |

Hi Bill,
Thought you would have recognized that steel.
The last song in the title is wrong.
It's not Across the sea, but Timi is playing the bridge part of the song "Farewell, Malihini", a song Benny Rogers did on a 49th State recording. |

WOW ! Seeing this video tempts me to throw all my guitars into the ocean. Timi will be THE steel guitarist to watch ... truly beautiful and such effortless harmonics ! Ron is to be congratulated for teaching the "Rogers" style to this talented young fellow ! His phrasing is awesome. |
