Having owned and played both, It seems to me that the PSG has a brighter sound than the Lap Steel, if this is so, why. Is it the strings, is it the pickup, is it the caminet, is it non of the above, OR is it my immanigation?

You're probably just used to hearing the higher sounds of the E9 pedal steel tuning. Lap steel players often use more low notes and chords in their playing.
As far as the instruments themselves go, the 2 main things that determines brightness are the pickup and the amplifier. Fender steels and Fender amps tend to be brighter. |

Thank you David. Not much is mentioned about E9th in relation to a Lap Steel. C6th A7th E7th & E13th are more in stile. Never tried E9th on a Lap Steel. I thoutht E9th was designed for the PSG because of the pedal and lever changes avaliable so it would give the insterment more versitility. I do think one of the attractions to the sound of a PSG is that high sound that they generate. When I played Lap Steel it was basically E7th or "A" when I played Island Music.
I think I will start a thread on the "String Bender" or "B" Bender and the Lap Steel.
Thanks again David
