I've been offered this Richenbacker D-16 by a fellow forum member, and neither one of us can figure a fair price, so we've agreed to see what others think.
It's missing it's back plate, and has a crude string pulling mechanisim that's been cut into the body and the bridge. Also, one the tabs that holds tuner covers on one each neck is broken. It sounds good and plays fine, and comes with it's original case.
What do you think would be a fair price? Thanks!

Estimates and the market are all over the place right now, so it's understandable that few are willing to quote a price for this thang. They don't command big $ even for dbl. 8s in primo cond., but $500 would be my tops unless the changer is working REALLY good for what you need, then $700. |

Gbase.com shows two similar Rickenbacker D-16s for sale in "excellent" and "near mint" condition for $1400 and $1250 respectively. I'd say probably 50-60% of that based on the condition shown in the pictures you posted. Remember that the prices shown on Gbase.com are "dealer" prices, not private individual sales.
Be aware that you will likely never find a replacement back plate. The other modifications should be able to be removed and the instrument restored to closer to its original condition.
Clay Harrell has a good discussion of grading vintage instruments on his web site.
Good luck coming up with a mutually acceptable price. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Thanks for the replies.
It is really hard to figure out the real world value of an instrument like this, and it seems like the dealers asking prices are often fanciful. Here's one that's been on ebay for a couple of months with a "buy it now" price of $999, or best offer, and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260708307473&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT _________________ "it's not in bad taste, if it's funny." - john waters |

Even though the economy is on it's butt right now, Ebay is full of steel guitars that are way over-priced. The word "fanciful" is too kind! Some of those sellers are waiting for the unwary new guy to buy their stuff. The D-16 is an OK guitar, but hasn't brought big bucks like a Stringmaster etc. |

A decade ago, I was told this was worth $1400, it's in perfect condition. I recently had it listed here, on the Forum, for $1100, and nobody had any interest in it.

I did some work on an all-metal one, but wasn't too impressed with the tone. That's a matter of taste of course....... |

I've seen a few of them and they all went for betwee $700 and $950 or so. I've never seen one with the string puller though, so if that's a mod then the price goes down. |

I'm pretty sure it's a mod. The rod is a twisted up coathanger. _________________ "it's not in bad taste, if it's funny." - john waters |

Bobby (Ingano) once used a typically so-so sounding one in a recording session that went thru some quality EQing, and he loved the sound, so even the junkers can be made to sound good. |
