It looks like a Tribotone pedal steel bar to me. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

It's one of the original Zirconium bars that were made. It has his name etched with the bar number on the flat end. That particular run of bars had a batch made for many of the major players. I'm sure there's some history on it somewhere here on the forum.
For a big bar, they are lightweight which makes them easy to maneuver. I have one; but I prefer a smaller bar (I mainly use the Jerry Byrd 919 bar).
Unless someone is still making them, the closest thing you'll find is a TriboTone. I also have one of those and really like it...Eric makes great bars. Many of my friends also use one. He has a large range of sizes and shapes, so I'm sure he has something close to the size of the original Zirconium bars. He also has a Jerry Byrd model.
He'll be at the TSGA Jamboree March 10-12, so come on down to Dallas, and stop by his booth!
And then come upstairs to the Non Pedal room and watch Billy Robinson use his Zirconium bar in action!! |

At about 0:30 in there's a stretch of what can be only termed "slant porn." You can tell it's a steel show, because everyone in the audience knew exactly what to applaud. |

I don't know about his bar, but I do know that he is one of the greatest players I've ever heard. I've heard one of his CDs and it is incredible. In fact, I'm going to go order them all now. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

That "slant porn" series of moves is enough to make me chuck my own bar over the cliff into Lake Superior and take up a different sport.[/quote] |

i had always read where Jerry Byrd said the 3/4 size bar was the perfect diameter for slant work but this one looks to be over 1" with no effect on Billys intonation. _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

If you are considering a larger diameter bar, you might consider the Paloma line of hand-crafted tone bars. They are very high quality ceramic bars featuring 4 diameters available from about .75 to about 1.25 inches. They are light in weight and yet deliver lots of sustain and have a nice organic tone. They are available in 4 different stock lengths and custom-cut lengths as well. Two glaze options yield two tones! And the surface does not scratch, is super smooth, quiet on the strings, and has a pleasant tactile feel.
In comparisons by Forum members who own Zirc bars, Paloma bars faired quite well... and at only $24 including shipping! You can search for that string in the Accessories section. You don't have to pay lots of money to get good tones!

Leonard Zinn has one of those bars. And he watches me close when I handle it, since he knows I like it |
