I think the "major labels" are over, and there is a new, and better, way to get music to the consumer.

Universal just this week fired 60 administrative employees, laid off dozens of others, and their CEO is about to jump ship and go to Sony.
Then the CEO of Warner, Edgar Bronfman, Jr.(former CEO of Universal), has just been sentenced to 15 months in prison and a fine of $6.7 million for insider trading while he was at Universal Music Group.

Right now all three major labels are in turmoil, full of corruption and instability. With two of the big three major labels without a CEO in the next few weeks, and Sony with a brand new one, and more layoffs predicted in the next 6 months.

I think any established artist, like Alan Jackson, would be very smart to get out as soon as possible and go to an independent label where they can be the proverbial "big fish" and get the support they need to keep recording and selling music.

If AJ is over I hope no one tells him. And God forbid he read about it here.

He sold a bunch of his cars recently at the Barrett-Jackson car auction in Scottsdale, i Guess part of his downsizing.

Loved his house/estate that he was selling, very cool, admittingly also very over-the-top.

Here is the link to Holly's post.

I don't think for one second that Alan is finished making music.

Changing labels is often the best move for legendary artists....A new team will certainly invest in Alan's career, bringing new enthusiasm to sell product from their investment......This translates to promotion, promotion, and more promotion of the Jackson trademark....I suspect Alan will survive in a big way.....Kevin assumes his career is over, this may be wishful thinking on his part, but not factual.....He is just coming off a hit with the Zack Brown Band...A rising band hitching their trailer to a legend is certainly no indication of a dying artist.......He's entering a new phase of his career just like Hag, Willie, and Jones did.....He has millions of fans who will support his music, both live and recorded.........Alan has already left a monumental mark in the traditional world of Country Music and many labels are chomping at the bit to get the business his music creates.........Paul

Gotta roll with the changes. Can't be a young man forever and only the smart survive.

I don't assume his career is over, just his ability to sell cd's (from an indie label)in the volume he had in the past to a newer generation that has moved on to Jason Aldean. He will always have a career in music if he so chooses.

That kind of success or failure can't be predicted. Sometimes as an aging artist you have to give up on the grandiosity and strip it down. I can add many aging artists who've recently recorded some of their best music in decades. Fans love to see a performer take off the fancy costumes and the make-up and just get honest and real. I think it's one of the greatest things to look forward to in an artist's trajectory.

With online marketing, social networking and today's technology, big record companies bankrolling a recording project then spending more for 1 video than the cd, may be over.
Independent artists and studios will be the future.. selling the product online will be the thing.

I like the idea that Alan can produce anything he wants to and not have to answer or negotiate with the label.

I think some people said that about the Hag about 25 years ago.
