Then just put on some sweet Hawaiian steel guitar music, scroll thru this fab collection of 50s era Oahu postcards, and experience a fraction of why it once was something very special http://www.flickr.com/photos/kamaaina56/233907041/in/photostream/
Most everything you see here is now long gone, along with 99% of the true Aloha spirit, and replaced by rubbish. But even so, it's still better than anywhere else. |

Ron:
Thanks a lot for that.
That brings back Hawaii as I remember it from way back----antheriums everywhere (along with bufos), Pan Am Boeing Stratocruisers (9 1/2 hours from San Francisco), long surfboards, and nothing to speak of from the Moana out to Diamond Head.
The Kau Kau drive in---I'd never seen anything like it at the time. Here's another picture of it.
And the Lurline---when I was 6, we left Waikiki in an outrigger after dark (with several beach boys) to say aloha to the Lurline as it left port for the mainland. The outrigger got swamped in its wake and we ended up in the drink. No harm done, but a great memory.
I'm wondering if that is Chick Daniels serenading the couple with the ukulele (guitar?) in front of the Royal? I blew the picture up with Photoshop, but can't be sure. That was Chick's beat.

Awesome recollections, Mitch, thanx for sharing! You know cool it was, luck you for sure. I dig the shot of The Kau Kau Korner, that's way before my arrival time and it was relpaced by a modern version in Coco's Diner, torn down for a now empty Hard Rock Cafe. |
