Thanks Andy & Mike,

For as bad as these videos are,I think there is another that someone from the forum labeled "the worst steel guitar ever!" Also, the Stones doing "Apartment #9" with Ron on steel. I can't find it. Thanks again, these videos are funny!

There's one worse than this Question Yikes Exclamation Laughing Shocked

Bob Knight posted one a couple years back but it was the same one in MP's reply, I think. If you search on it, you'll find a 7 or 8 page thread...some other examples...also opposing views on RW's steel guitar prowess.

Thanks Jerry,

Now that I think about it,"The Girl with the Far Away Eyes" is probably the video labeled the worse steel guitar ever. If it can be found, Apartment #9 is ever worse. I did find one version by Keith Richards, but it isn't the one with Ron playing so poorly. If anyone finds it,please let me know. Page 7 or 8 where? youtube?

This is the forum thread I was thinking of Michael, but I see the link has been taken down. That first one was the one in the example Mike posted and the one I was tossing attempted humorous remarks toward. There are others there though. http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=148911

Wouldn't it be cool if Ron Wood could really play the steel well, and he played it on a wide variety of songs.

Or if the Stones added a full time rock steel player, (Preferably me Laughing) the way the Pretenders did?

Thanks Jerry. That is the thread, but unfortunately the videos have been removed. I wonder if Ron had something to do with their removal.

Mike,

There might be a way to contact the Stones on the www. I asked Paul McCartney and Judy Collins if they wanted to jam, no reply. We had a saying in sales,"If you don't ask,the answer is always no." Send the Stones a sample of your playing.

I guess this is the consequence of to little practice and nervousnous, and Keith trying to help with throwing in licks didn't work.
I think both of them are good in their ways. I liked Ron on the Rod Stewart/ Faces records, and Keith is better when he plays his signature lines.
Btw does anyone know on which Mick Jagger song J.D. Manness plays steel?

Doesn't Al Perkins play on some tunes on "Exile on Main Street"?

I wouldn't completely bash RW, even though he does come off embarassingly bad on those clips, but there is some nice lap and slide work on his early solo records. I think he plays pedal steel on a track on Jerry Lee Lewis's "Last Man Standing" record, as well as the studio version of "Girl with Far Away Eyes". Although his playing on those recordings is not on par with most recorded steel, it is certainly better than what is on those clips.

I give Ron credit for having a lot to do with the sound of the (non-Small) Faces, and also for Rod's early rockin' hits like "Maggie May" and "You Wear it Well" and the covers of "I'm Losing You" and "Twisting the Night Away." They influenced just about everyone playing rock at the time, including the Stones, and lots of bands that came later. The Replacements for one often pointed to them.

Check out their version of "Maybe I'm Amazed":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLhoLkTyNkM

I hear a lot of that in McCartney's live version of the song on Wings Over America, which is way looser than the studio original.

I just checked the Wikipedia entry for the album Every Picture Tells a Story and see that Ron got a pedal steel credit there. I don't have a copy of that and can't place which track that would be. Anyone know?

Well, I wish I could play as bad as that.

The intonation is off. right?
And he doesn't resolve some passages?
Hangs around the 1 chord unimaginatively?
Doesn't get out of Mick way?

I'm a total beginner. How many did I get right?

Cliff, my CD copy is stored away and I can't find the track-by-track credits online, but my recollection is that pedal steel on "Torn and Frayed" is the only time he's listed. Recording that album was barely controlled choas and there are known errors and omissions, and that's going by my memory, so he might have done more. But if that was all, that's enough. It's a really great pedal steel part.

Several years ago I saw Woodie on TV (local station, maybe) talking about coming to Nashville to get a steel guitar and this amazing player we had here named Buddy Emmons. Apparently he didn't take any lessons while he was in town. Rolling Eyes

I'm a huge Stones fan, but there are some instruments that you just can't "swagger" your way through.

For starters, he should drop the bottleneck mentality that's wreaking havoc on his vibrato!

I love how Keith Richards is telling someone to shut up then laughing into the microphone during his background vocal in "Girl With Faraway Eyes" at 1:55 Laughing you can tell Mick is totally pissed off by this Exclamation LOVE IT!

These videos are bad on many many levels IMHO, and I can't really tell if the steel playing is the cause or just brings down the quality that much further

Cut him some slack. The Stones have never been known as virtuoso musicians but that hasn't stopped them from becoming the world's biggest band. He's doing this for fun. I don't think he's angling for anyone's gig.

We all know there are superior players all over this forum, but I'm sure Woody could teach a few of us some things. Let's see: bass and guitar for Faces, The Jeff Beck Group, Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones....

Woody was mostly a slide player, I liked his solo CD 'Slide on This' from about 10-15 years ago. Never thought he was a good replacement for Mick Taylor though, Mick was the best, '69-'72 were the Stones best years!
