Getting ready to start design and construction on an 8 string. Some common measurements specs would be most helpful...string spacing at the bridge, scale length are the two main ones. Also, need to find a builder to make a pup; preferrably an alnico based humbucker or blade style dual coil.
Thanks!!

Dave, when I built my 8 string guitar I used 7/16s spacing at the bridge, 3/8s at the nut on a 22.5 inch scale, but those things are all personal choices. The one thing I would do differently if I were to build another is to reconsider the popular wisdom of strum space between the top string and the control knobs. I don't need that much space. I'd reduce it to 1 and 1/4 inch to facilitate grabbing the knob in the violin effect, but I'm sure there are players who would do otherwise. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. Typical Stringmaster spacing is approximately 3/8" at the bridge for an overall of about 2 5/8". Nut spacing is around 11/32" for approximately 2.4" overall.
Many good pickup options. I'm playing some Vintage Vibe blade type pickups in my triple...very nice, but I'm finding that I really miss the tone I get from the Rio Grande Stringmaster style singles that I use in my regular production models.
There's a little pickup info on my Steel guitar page:

Hi Dave. I make lap steels and string spacing is personal but I have constant spacing from nut to bridge. The customer decides. I have a 1/2" spacing on one 3/8th on another and standard guitar spacing on a cheapy as it uses a strat style pickup. The problem comes when jumping from one to another. Slanting seems a little easier on the 3/8th but that is just a familiarity thing.
It really is a personal thing with hand and finger size being a factor
