OK guys here's my dilemma:
I bought a Carvin XV100 combo from a forum member a couple of years ago that had a JBL K-130 4 ohm speaker in it.
I love the sound of this speaker....or I did....it seems the kid was playing his 5 string bass thru my amp and the speaker now has a fuzzy sounds on certain notes up the neck on guitar.
What is a similar speaker to this one?
I LOVE the top end on it...what current 15" speakers sound like the K-130?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Jay, you can have your speaker re-coned. There are some guys here on the forum that do that. Where do you live?

Hi Doug,
I'm halfway between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe.
Recone-from what I have found, there are no 4 ohm recone kits left....only 8 ohm which people say sound different.

Weber VST has some nice sounding 4-Ohm JBL 130 cones. Not actual JBL parts, but Ted Weber, being a HUGE lover of these classic JBL's, contracted to have some very nice ones made. They probably still have them and can re-cone for you.
Maybe Woody Woodell has some cones too.

It could also be that the cone dust cover has bibrated loose. You can check this by carefully (not to dent the cover) attach a piece of masking tape to the cover leaving a long tpe leader. Pull gently on the leader to se if there is a loose gap between the cone and cap. You can reinforce the cap with some athesive around the edges. A speaker repair shop should sell the proper adhesive on line somewhere.

...that 5-string bass will kill your guitar speakers every time...
It is true that JBL no longer manufactures 4-ohm kits for the K series but there are several other sources for these cones which a good speaker tech will be able to obtain for you. Reconing is the thing to do, it should cost you not more than $150 or so, there will be a break-in period at first during which the speaker MAY sound a bit brighter than it did before, but you will have your JBL speaker back in action. |

So I guess my next question is: Has anybody out there been in this situation with this speaker, had it re-coned and is happy with the sound after it was broken in?
Was that your experience Dave?
I'm really not this anal, I should just drob the hammer and get it done.
Who in the no. California area does this?
Maybe a trip to LA would be best.
Any input is welcome,

Orange County Speaker Repair in Garden Grove does excellent work. I have had many JBL speakers reconed by them. Most recently a D130, sounds great.

They list recone prices online, quick turn around too. With the price of gas you might want to ship it.

I would check that dust cap before reconing. I fixed several speakers (SRO's and a JBL-D130) by simply adding the epoxy to reinforce the dust cap where it loosened up from vibration. A cheap fix.

| Ditto on Orange County Speaker. They did a great job on a couple D130's for me. They recommended the aftermarket kits, at half the price of JBL parts, and said they doubted I would hear any difference. They were referred to me by a friend who is head tech at a very high end studio here in L.A. who sends all their work there. When I lived in Nashville Woody Woodell also did excellent work on some JBL studio monitors for me. |

I have a pair of vintage JBL D130's that i will never sell. Reconed - yes - sound great - ubetcha. I am blessed with a little knowledge and great technicians Fender has put an Emminence shallow cone 15 in the Steel King and Jazz King amps that emulate the D130 characteristics - if you are looking for a replacement...Reconing to your impedance would be my recommendation.
