What's the right sized bar for a youngster?

Post by David Griffin »

I'm teaching my 11 year old daughter to play pedal steel. I am wondering if I should start her out with a small bar & gradually work our way up to a "normal" sized bar as her hands grow? OR just start her her w/ a "normal" sized bar? She's been playing lapsteel for about a year & has good bar handling skills & her intonation is great. But,she's using a small round-nosed bar. Opinions? :D I want to make sure we don't do any damage to her hands.

I think the idea of her startin' out with a smaller bar is a good idea on pedal steel, this way, she'll have more time to get used to the bar on pedal steel and later on, you could switch her to a normal sized bar.

Hey David; how far are you from Ashdown, Ar. I'm needing a teacher for my 8 yr. old great grandson. I know thats a little young but he's really interested, so I got him a Carpsteel & cut the legs down to fit him. Any help finding a teacher will be appreciated. Andy H. (wish I'd had that kinda help when I was 8.)

Thanx,Brett, that's kinda the direction I'm leaning too. Andy: I live in north central Arkansas on the south shore of Bull Shoals Lake about 10 miles from the Missouri state line. LONG way from Ashdown! :D Wish I could help!
