Anybody have any advice about these amps. I have a line on a good deal on one, but wondered if anybody ever used one with a psg?

Terry,

I play non-pedal steel guitar and have used a Music Man HD 130 with two 10" spaekers. I love the amp. They are built like a tank, very road worthy and produce excellent clean tone with plenty of power.I know some models are very well liked by some pedal steel players. The 212 model may be a great choice. They seem to be under valued in the market so you should be able to get one pretty cheap. My amp is an early model and uses a tube for the phase splitter - later models used a solid state device. I have heard the earlier models with the tube phase splitter are prefered. My only complaint is they weigh a ton. Good luck.

Gary

Hi Terry,

I used to have a Music Man 212 HD 130, great all around workhorse. As has been mentioned, it's fairly similar tonally to the Fender Twin, though it has a solid state pre. I currently have a Music Man 115 and it's my main amp for steel guitar. My personal preference is the 15 inch speaker over 12's, but there are certainly many great players who have used 12's to great effect. It sounds awesome with the psg IMHO!

All the best,

Julian

Terry I can't speak for that amp but I have an HD 150 and a 65 watt bass/guitar head (no reverb- I use outboard effects anyway) and they sound great. I use them with either a 15" BW or a D 130 or K 140 JBL or 12" JBLs. These things are powerful and clean. If that amp is anything like these I have it should be a killer amp.

Terry, to add to the post....... I have an old MusicMan HD212 One Fifty which is probably the best and most versatile amp I've ever owned. I play both lead guitar and steel and this is the amp I alway use when "doubling"! I plug my Telecaster into the main channel and then my steel goes into the first channel (the one which isn't usually used) and just use a Boss delay pedal with it. The MM sounds as good or better than my NV112 or Randall Steelman 500. I have a pair of very heavy ElectroVoice speakers in mine. It also has a built in phase shifter which can be tweaked to produce a very nice organ effect......Here's a shot of it...JH in Va.

I also have a 212 HD-150.Haven't used it a lot for pedal(my Session 500 is the one that most often goes to work)but the times I have it's worked fine.Excellent hardworking amps and IMO if Leo hadn't sold Fender the 212 HD-150 is what the Twin Reverb would have become.

BTW the phaser can be turned on but not cycle and you can get some very cool "cocked-wah" sounds.

I've got the 115 RP model. It's the best steel amp I've ever used, and I gig with it all the time. And the phaser effect is cool if you set it right.

The one thing I don't particularly like about Music Man amps is the reverb. It's alright, but a bit sterile-sounding compared to the reverb in Fender amps. I use a Boss pedal for that instead, so it's not really an issue.

I'm sure the 212 would sound great too...I recommend it.

Here's mine...

Ryan, I agree with you on the reverb of these amps. I don't use mine either.......JH in Va.

Ryan, if you'll look at the second picture I posted on my earlier post you'll see the picture of my steel and on the fold out lid of my pack seat there's a Boss ME-50 Multiple effects unit. It has anything you'd want in it but I just mostly use the delay. Sometimes if I'm gigging as the only lead I'll use the tremolo or chorus for a little variation in sound. If I'm playing guitar and steel both I might use either a Boss delay pedal or my old Deluxe Memory Man which you can see on top of the amp. As far as reverb, I usually don't use it much, just a tad of delay with one repeat.....JH in Va.

I tried one some years ago when I regretted selling my Fender Twin, but I didn't like it. Not clean enough, in my opinion.

Terry, great amps..big, loud, heavy and overall excellent for Steel.. I used one for a short time a year or so back, what I found was this..

Too strong in the 130 mode, I couldn't use it above 2 or 3 and that's not enough preamp gain..at least that's what I think....overall good in the 65 watt mode, the stock Music Man speakers were too strong in the mids so I swapped them out with Fender Emmi's ( Gold Labels). Very nice bright hi end, clear, not boomy bottom end..

I sold it because I was offered a ton of cash for it...!

I wouldn't pass on a good deal for one of these...

I have a very early one. I bought it used in '77, and they only came out in '76. The guy who sold it to me went to work in a local music store and every time I went in to buy strings and picks he told me selling me the amp was the biggest mistake of his life, and if I ever wanted to ell it, he'd buy it back.

It's a great amp, but it weighs nearly 80 pounds, and I'm tired of carrying it around. I'm using a pair of ZT clubs and a POD instead.

I am travelling to England by car ferry next week to bring this beauty over to Ireland, i wonder is anyone using the 2 x 10 150w combo for steel? i do prefer outboard reverb, rather than the clangy onboard spring reverb, and i will be utilising both channels for lead guitar and steel, so thats two outboard setups,

Great amps. I own two HD130-2-12 amps that I used for guitar. I bought an HD 130-410 that had been converted to a 1-15 that had a JBL-E-130 speaker in it. That is a great amp for steel , but heavy.
I converted that amp back to a 4-10 and sold it to buy something else. I regret that, but I guess I had something else in mind. The HD-130 is the best of the series in my opinion.

I replaced the stock reverb tank in one of these with a 3-spring (6-spring) from accutronics and it made a big difference.
