Bobby Edwards has a voice as silk.
Jack Scott is a legendary Rock'n'Roll performer, who never achieved fame, is this correct?
Jonathan Edwards... I rember listening to this record in a friends living room. One of the first singer/ songwriters with a country touch, we enjoyed him immensely.

Wasn't it Jack Scott that had a hit with "Burning Bridges" back in the early 60's I'm thinking. DW

Great singers all. Jack Scott had a buncha hits including, Goodbye Baby, What in the World's Come Over You, Burning Bridges. Unique style and voice.

I 'member Honky Tonk Stardust Cowboy well. I have some JE but I think it's from a later era.

Thanks Chipper.

JE actually came from the folk camps, but seemed to have a country bent in his styling.

His first big hit was "Sunshine (Go Away Today)", and later on. "Lay Around The Shanty (and Put A Good Buzz On)".

Two other country-flavored songs are "Have Yourself A Good Time For Me" and "My Home Ain't In The Hall Of Fame". Plenty of Bill Keith, too, on these cuts.

Jack Scott was kind of a country/pop artist. He only achieved mild acclaim [compared with others], but had one of those distinguished voices, as Jerry pointed out.

Bobby Edwards, too. Another great voice, but sadly, had only mild success.

But they all were a success with me. Smile

Chip, some more great stuff here.
I used to sing Honky Tonk Stardust Cowboy back when I first heard Jonathan Edwards doing it and I didn't know until a couple of years ago that Lefty Frizzell had done it.
JE sang on a few Emmy Lou Harris cuts, "One Of These Days" for one.
You're The Reason was covered by several others as well. Johnny Tillotson, John Fogerty, and fairly recently Hank III. I like Bobby Edwards vocal the best of all of them.
here's a youtube link to Lefty on HTSC.

Dave, that was a great rendition of HTSC by Lefty Frizzel. Without really looking, I kind of assumed that JE wrote it, but, LF singing it, shows right away that isn't the case. I wonder who wrote it, now? I'll hafta to go diggin'.

Had no idea, either, that YTR has been covered by those artists you mentioned.

Thanks for pickin' up and runnin' with the ball. Smile

Acording to the discography in the Lefty Frizzell biography, the song was recorded on the 19th of July, 1971. It was written by a someone called D. Statler. Musicians included Junior Huskey on bass and Stu Basore on steel.

I have an old Jonathan Edwards eight track that I transfered to cassette which has "Honky Tonk Stardust Cowboy" on it as well as "Sunshine", "My Home Ain't in the Hall of Fame". It's a great album for sure. If I'm not mistaken, it's Johnathan who's doing all the great harmonica playing throughout the album. He did have one country hit at a certain point as he did it on Nashville Now one night but I can't remember what it was.........JH in Va.

Yes, he's a great harp player. Think he grew up in Ohio, but split for the East Coast folk scene back when. Played the Boston circuit quite often.

D. Statler. There's an unfamiliar name.

Maybe an aside to your topic Chip, but I dug out my JE album. It was recorded in '77. Looks like it was basically Emmy's Hot Band on the LP. It is titled Sailboat. Some supporting musicians: Emmy, Rodney Crowell, Mike Auldridge, Albert, Glen D Hardin, Emory Gordy, Herb Pederson, et al.

Some cuts: Hoyt Axton's Evangelina, Curtis Mayfield's People get ready, several Jesse Winchester penned tunes....pedal steel by Hank DeVito. Produced by Brian Ahern.

I think Johnathan even did a short stint later on with the Seldom Scene.

Seems like there was a large group of singers/musicians who collaborated on each other's projects during that era.

Yeah Jerry,

That's great info. I don't have "Sailboat". I got one called "MHAITHOF", and "HTSDC". George Grantham was doing the drumming on MHAITHOF. Think he was with Buffalo Springfield and maybe Poco for awhile.

You are right. Back then, there was a real collaboration and comraderie among all those good folks.

I got a copy of him doing "People Get Ready". "Evangelina" is a super song; I only have Hoyt's version [but nothing wrong with that].

Chip, I've done a little research on Darrel Statler. He wrote at least these two songs:

My Favorite Memory- The Cox Family

It's Another World- Loretta Lynn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjVI5FhAdTY

That's great Joachim,
I tried for at least a 1/2 hour yesterday lookin' all over the www, and got not 1 hit on D. Statler. A couple doctors in the Maryland area, but that was it.
Looked on YouTube, as well.

Got to head out to work now, but I'll be checkin' out your links later today.

Good work, buddy. Very Happy

Years ago I had a Jonathon Edwards album with James Burton and the Hot Band all over it! Does anyone know if his stuff is available?

I love his voice!

I always loved Bill Keith's steel playing...we played a bunch of shows with JE when I was in Boston in the early '70's and hung with Bill a bunch...even played on some JE sessions that never got released....

Speaking of Bill Keith, another record from that era I loved was "Sweet Moments with The Blue Velvet Band" ....

Hiya John, I was waiting for you to chime in here, sooner or later.

It's hard to stay away, aint it?

Again: Here are 4 classic songs off of Jonathan Edward's album 'HAVE A GOOD TIME FOR ME'; featuring JE of course; and the irrepressibly tasteful Bill Keith, on a black push/pull D-10 Emmons pedal steel guitar, no less. This is the truth.

"Have Yourself A Good Time For Me"
http://picosong.com/yVG

"Places I've Been"
http://picosong.com/yXs

"Travelin' Blues"
http://picosong.com/yXn

"My Home Aint In The Hall Of Fame"
http://picosong.com/yVi

I may have goofed-up on 'picosong' on other posts dealing with either JE or Bill Keith. My humblest apologies, friends. I'm getting up there in the years now [and many of us here are well aware of the horrors that presents].
Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Sad [/i][/b]

Does anyone know which of JE's albums featured James Burton and the Hot Band? I've looked on Amazon, yet none of the tracks' titles sound familiar....

Thanks,

'Rocking Chair'!!!!

That was one of the songs - ring any bells? I'd love to get a copy! JB does some super nut-bend harmonics on that one....

Roger...I just don't know. Wish I did. Doesn't ring a bell.

I'm sure something or someone will pop-up with the answer.

I'll look around, for ya. That's all I can do, brother.

Thanks, Chip...

However - I just managed to find an affordably-priced CD of the album (it's called 'Rocking Chair' - I've just found out; no wonder that title stuck in my head) for sale in Switzerland!!! It's now on its way to me.

Here in the US the Amazon prices were absurd.

I remember really liking JE's voice, and the band were everything you'd expect from such luminary players. I had, however, forgotten it until I saw this thread - I'm much obliged!

Good for you Roger, and thanks.

Thank you, too, Graham for that Bobby Edwards update. I'm gonna see if I can get a copy of that LP

My CD copy of 'Rockin' Chair' has arrived from Switzerland!

Wow! Every bit as good as I remember it being, with great playing from that original Hot Band line-up (Burton, Hardin, Ware, Gordy, DeVito, et al); they created a new 'high' in country music, in my opinion, and the production here is superb. I love Edwards' voice, too.

Emmylou can be heard on back-up vocals. This was a great time to be listening to country, and it was followed by the fine work by Ricky Skaggs and Randy Travis; dunno where it's all gone wrong, really... Confused
