I guess there's no way of knowing but I wonder what % of steel players are represented on this forum? Could it be more than 20%? As much as 50%? Less than 5%? Maybe the question should be - how many steel guitatists have computers and internet access and what % of them are with us? Don |

Ok, those steelers that don't have Computers with Internet access, raise your hands...oh yeah, never mind. Just kiddin there Don but you pose an interesting question even though it's dang near impossible to arrive at an answer. I'll tell you what though, those that do and aren't Forum members are really missin out on the wealth of knowledge here. |

I think 3 and a third out of a hundred would be closer considering how many steel guitars have been sold over the last 75 years. |

I have been told by a member here I wasn't a steel player!.. seriously.
Any forum will host a certain number of self appointed experts, especially a musicians forum.
Not many here on the SGF thank goodness, but they do pop up on rare occasions. _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Allthough I play steel, I click on the Music Section first because that is my main interest. Than comes the steel, or music in which the PSG is included. |

I had no idea we had so many ! You check any city of 50,000 and you might find 2.
Happy for what we have.

From my perspective traveling around as a steel player and meeting players in the trenches I would think a very unscientific guestament would be about 25% of the players out there playing are on the forum. _________________ Bob |

I have a feeling we would be very surprised to find out how many steel players there really are world wide. My guess would be less than 10% are forum members. I would also guess that less than 10% of forum members post regularly.
BTW, I know there are some members who do not play at all. They're just nuts about the steel guitar and follow it closely for the fun of it. I won't mention his name, but I know one guy who is a prominant member and appears to be an expert histoian. He's a serious, well respected, frequent poster and you would think he's probably a decent player but he doesn't play at all. Don |

I do not consider myself to be a steel player even though I try and play with more than one group. I am a wannabe. I have been doing this for a very long time and recognize that the IT that real steel players have is missing from ability. That does not mean that I cannot have some opions for those just beginning nor does it mean that I cannot identify a "real" steel player when I hear one. |

This came up about 10 years ago and we tried to figure out how many Pedal Steels had been built. I think at that time the concensus guess was about 30,000.
Now that doesn't count all of the Non Pedal players and Lord knows how many lap steels that have been built over the years. I think we still have lots of room to grow. |

I don't think you can estimate the number of steelers from the number of steel guitars built over the years. If that were the case, then counting regular guitars would probably prove that everyone on Earth played the guitar.
I know it's impossible to imagine, but some steel guitars have been thrown out over the years, while most steel guitarists probably have multiple steel guitars. I know I have about 20. I guess I must go by the theory that the more instruments you own, the better you play. (At least that's my excuse.)
I remember what my Calculus professor at the University once said, "Some students think that the mere possession of books imparts knowledge, but you actually have to read the books." |

That is an interesting question. I know of a few real good steel players in my locality here in the UK, some playing, some not, and they have never been members and I can think of 2 who don't have the Internet although they own computers. So, yes, it's a small figure, and there's probably many members who are not steel players I suppose.

If you are talking pedal guitars.........
At that time there were already about 20,000 pre 1990 MSA's out there and who knows how many Sho~Buds, Emmons, Marrs, Fenders, Sierras, Derby's, Deckely's, Fessy's, JCH's, LTD's, Zums, ZB Custom's. etc..
Add to that the Carters, the new MSA Milleniums, Willy's, Rains, Carp's, etc., and I think you would be approaching 100,000, and close to that in players. JMOHO _________________ John Drury
