Hi all
Never too difficult for my ignorance to be apparent...
Can anyone explain the function of the small window below the main window where the tuners are accessed?

This is for adjustable return springs. Originally it had screws going through the holes and into the return springs so they could be tightened or loosend. You can still do that if you want, I would sure recommend it. Martin. _________________ Several custom steels. NV-112 Boss DD-7 |

It is a fine steel the best Bud model I think. I have 3, 1 is on standbuy for me in New Orleans. I play this red one all the time on gigs.

Thanks Martin
I had a hunch that it might be for spring adjusters - so the next question, particularly as you make a point of recommending them, is what are the benefits of having them? More reliable return? Lighter pull-action? Something else?
Cheers

If you take up the space (that's currently occupied by a spring) with an adjusting screw, you will end up with a harder pull action |

If you adjust it right, they will be softer pulls. In my experience, that is.
Actually, I think Francois' endplate is transitional. I'd like to see the fingers to see what style fingers is in the guitar. They might not work best with adjustable springs. _________________ "Good judgement comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgement"~old cowboy proverb.

Thank you Richard and James
Reading about the Pro III Custom, it's supposed to be double-raise/double-lower but as you can see from the photo, this one ain't....
So I guess it is a transitional - the fingers are the same as on my Pro I S12 and the serial numbers are within a few hundred of each other
Cheers

OK James
Maybe we can talk about them as well, when you're in a position to look at the work for my Pro I conversion....
Meanwhile, sounds like you're mending, which can only be good news
Cheers

That may be a transitional Pro III as my 76 does not have the cutout for the springs. They are on a bracket below the return springs on the under carriage. |
