After 8 months I finally broke a 3rd string. Guess I'll have to get rid of it. After putting the 3rd string raise to A# on it I wanted to see how long it would last. WOW

Dickie,You have to come to my house and then I'm afraid my wife would kill both of us. Then I would have to deal with Gary R as he made the guitar especially for me. I can't beleave this guitar. It just don't break strings. This is only the second string I've broke since It was built. The other was a 4th.

Well, I have had my guitar for two years and I haven't broke a string yet! I guess I am disappointed too. I'd better call Gary and have him to build me a new one that the strings will last for three years; although you might be those "Black Diamond Strings that help"....Bye ya'll

I know this topic is in praise of Rittenberry steels, and the topic title is a bit of fun,
but it could have a subliminally negative impact on Rittenberry sales.
The title will live on in the memory long after the topic thread has been forgotten |

But in my mind, a seed of doubt has been subliminally planted, and will be difficult to erase.
In a few years time, when I hear the name Rittenberry, I will recall that there is something dubious about this make of steel, but I won't be able to remember specifically what the problem is.
You may think I'm joking, but I can assure you I'm not.
If I was a steel manufacturer, I would definately not like to see headlines about my instruments that caused raised eyebrows, even if they were made in jest. |

All I have ever read about Rittenberrys has been very positive.
Those positive reports have left quite a strong impression on me. So much that I have considered getting one, on more than one occasion. (& still might)
Someone joking in the topic title won't erase that in my mind.

It will have the complete opposite effect on my memory. I read the post and I was concerned that a problem had been experienced on such an outstanding instrument. I was delighted to learn it was another "positive opinion" of Gary's work. I believe this post enhances the positive perception of Rittenberry guitars with some humor involved.

Bill, is it possible that when the 3rd string broke, it hit you, causing and and suffering. Such a traumatic even can have long term repercussions. You should determine whether the string was defective or maybe the guitar was defective. Either way you should sue for damages and buy a real guitar.
Seriously though I still jump when they break but it's been a while since I've had one rip though my hand. Enjoy your guitar!

I would never say anything negative about Gary or his work and any one who knows me knows Gary and I are very close friends. With that said, being from the hills of the Ozarks where we still make shoes out of Deer hide and shirts out of burlap, what the hell does subliminal mean.

At the sake of repeating my previous remarks:
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY RITT - IT IS THE BEST GUITAR I HAVE EVER OWNED! (and that's been many!) My others are all sitting on "standby" - it is my "go to" guitar & gets rave reviews from everyone who hears it.

Good gosh, I've got 2 Rittenberry's and only ever had 1 string break.
I've never changed strings on either one yet. I keep telling myself I
should change them, because I use both of them a lot, but they still
sound so good, I'll just wait till a string breaks and then install a new set.
With the economy as it is, I don't want to waste any money.

What it did do for me is put me somewhat in doubt of the ear of someone who can happily play two-year-old strings....  am I doing something really wrong here, cause if I'm playing three or four hours a day my strings are shot within six weeks at the very best? I mean Cobras, GHS, Jagwires, D'Addario, SIT, doesn't hardly matter. They don't break (I tune a C6th set to Bb for tonal reasons) but they lose their pep, sparkle, vim & vigor and the overtones start drifting out of tune, and it's not from dirt or corrosion. Maybe it's me that's shot?  |

I have been an Emmons guitar fan and player since 1981 and have read all kinds of negative remarks toward Emmons on this forum but I have grown to like them even more thru it all. I see the title of this thread as no more than an attention "getter". It sure caused me to read it. I also know that Bill is a dyed in the wool Rittenberry guy. I must admit that I would love to have a Rittenberry to keep my Emmons' and BMI company. It is one brand that I think I would really like. Bill, please tell us you were only joking about raising the 3rd string to A#. I do have a hard time with that one.

Well in short, some said raising the 3rd to A# couldn't be done. Wrong thing to tell me. Even Gary R didn't think we could do it but we did. I have it on a right vertical.Lets face it,on a six string the B is a 11 ga. I for one bend the hell out of it. Also guys with B-benders also bend it a lot. So why is it so hard to beleave it wouldn't work on a steel. The problem is on my Ritt we just barely had enough room before the changer finger hit the body. I use it when I raise my Es, you get that extra high note. Any one interested in hearing it, give me a call.
