As if I hadn't already been blessed beyond belief, today I got a new job. I was asked to be the new steel player for Gene Watson. I have been a Gene fan since the 70s and never dreamed that I would get to work for him. I have big shoes to fill stepping in those the likes of Robbie Primm, Corky Owens and Tiny Olson. Now I have to get my Lloyd, Buddy, Sonny and Mike chops up. I spent part of today with Gene's band leader, Chip Brickman, and guitar player Willie Glover. I have lots of parts to learn. Thanks to my friend Jr. Knight for suggesting and recommending me to Chip and Gene.
Most of all I have to thank God for all His blessings and my wife Joan for her patience and support. I hope to see some of you at a show in the coming year.

Great for you, Johnny! Gene's music is legendary and suits you to a tee. He hasn't lost a thing singing either. Brad Paisley had Gene come out and open a show last year and when he came out to do his soundcheck ALL of the artists and their bands came out to hear him. It was awesome. He probably had 100 people at his soundcheck! He still does all of his songs in the same key from what I could tell and he still hits that big high note at the end of Farewell Party.

You're gonna love playing his music and I couldn't be happier for you.

Congratulations, my friend!

Tim

"He still does all of his songs in the same key from what I could tell and he still hits that big high note at the end of Farewell Party."
I found out the hard way that Gene doesn't go up a whole tone on Farewell Party when we backed him up last year at a Xmas show here in Calgary. He politely stated AFTER we had done the whole step AND he had nailed it, that they hadn't gone up the whole tone mod. in years. Next day we had'er right. Best of luck Johnny, from me and Murray Milne, he'll be proud of you.

Not many of the great singers from "back in the day" would say they would hang it up when they couldn't sing the song in the original key.
I love that about Gene.
Good score Johnny

Congratulations Johnny. I saw Gene a month or so ago and he is singing better now than he did ten years ago. It is always inspiring to play behind that kind of talent. A dream gig.
