Thread/Die Size for Nylon Tuning Nuts

Post by Sonny Jenkins »

I'm adding some pull rods (1/8"),,,what is the thread size? Do these HAVE to be rolled threads? Surely I can thread a rod that accept the George L tuning nuts?

The nylon tuning nuts are not threaded (at least all I've seen) and they thread themselves when they are screwed on to the pull rod.

A 6-32 NC or 6-40 NF die will thread an 1/8" rod. I prefer the NF [national fine] thread for better fine tuning.

Sometimes a 5-40 adjustable die on softer metal, but it can be troublesome on an 1/8" rod. Tight fit and can bind and break a rod unless you sand down the size a bit.

Some rod ends are "rolled threads" which are larger than their "non rolled" counter parts, but I've used a 6-40 or 5-40 expandable dye with good results.

The nylon tuning nuts I have from George L are threaded and seem to be either a 6-40 or 5-40,,,more than a 6-32 for sure.

At Emmon's we used 6-32 cut thread on 7/64 stainless welding rod. This size thread is fine for the
Emmon's guitars. I could see where a finer thread would be of advantage on a guitar with faster acting changer system.

Anyone know the rod threads used on the old MSAs?

My Franklin uses 1/8" aluminum rod and threaded with 6-40 TPI. 1/8" is slightly small for a #6 thread but the 40 TPI works OK. The 40 TPI also provides a finer adjustment.

It doesn't have to be "rolled" on. Franklin uses a 6-40 die to tap the threads.
