When switching to a D from a G on the top string in C6 8 string tuning, do I raise or lower the G to D
Maybe I need a different string.
Suggestion?
Thanks

You would need to lower the G to D, and yes, you would need a different string gauge, usually a .015 or .016.

If your high E String is a .014 gauge use a .015 gauge string for the D String.

Go one thousandth fatter for the one whole note (Lower) difference in pitch.

Does this formula apply to a standard tuned 6 string acoustic guitar when lowering the entire tuning down 1 step?
( wanting to use C related chords while playing in Bb)

If you're tuning down a whole tone and want the same tension on the strings, you'll need to increase the size of the strings, probably by .002. (maybe a little more on the lower strings)

Thanks again Guys
Really appreciate all the help!

Bob, one last question please:
I also have a Telecaster.
Is there any reason the same guideline would not apply to electric guitars.
I can't image one, but I'm not a tech.

Gary

The same principle should apply to the electric guitar.
